If Zillow Becomes an Amazon - That Could Be Great For Real Estate

By

There has been a lot of information and opinions going back and forth over the merger of Zillow and Trulia. In a post by Jon Kolsky -A Ton of Unanswered QUestions About Z & T Merging there was a comparison and I thought it was negatively implied that Amazon has negatively impacted book publishers.

Before you click away and not read this, please read this link regarding the results and research Amazon has collected.

What Amazon has done is shown how great eBooks can be for the benefit of the consumer, publisher and author.Which in turn gives us a public that reads more which from my poiunt of view (even being a realtor) is a very good thing.

Before you jump up and down, please remember that it was not Amazon that was found guilty of ebook price fixing or conspiring with publishers on price fixing. It was many others that included Apple. Perhaps Zillow may be like one of those or perhaps they maybe like Amazon. We don't know yet.

However, if Zillow can do to real estate what Amazon has done for the consumer, publisher and author in the book industry,  I would not mind Zillow doing that for the Agents, Buyers and Homeowners. To better understand the details please look at this link and let me know your thoughts.

Personally I don't think the book industry compares to real estate. Therefore I do not think the analogy is correct but I certaionly will stand up for Amazon for what they did to to the eBook business. Yes they make a nice profit but the publishers, the authors and the consumers all benefit. How is that bad?

Jeff, If Zillow could do for Realtors what Amazon did ... I would have to ask ... at what price. The model needs to be changed. Zillow should pay the listing agent for the listing ... not the MLS. Agents should profit not the giants! Just my two cents ... which are free.

What ever Zillow does I will still make my money, hope this Zillow/Trulia situation plays out well for all, consumers and agents included.

Time will tell!

Hi Kathleen - I do not pretend to know how this would work or if this is even possible. Amazon's model shows that the consumer pays less, the authors, the publisher makes more (the author should but that is controlled by the publisher.)

I could go on and on but until I see where this merger ends up, Trulia and Zillow are not going to stop my success. I try to leverage their errors to entice my prospects.

I greatly apprecaite and respect your comments and opinions. Thank you for sharing them.

I just hate the way we are diving into a 3rd class view when we should be viewed as 2st class.

But you are only as good as the company you keep

I can see it now for the price of a book you can have your home placed for sale on Zillow.

Good morning Jeff. I don't think anyone fully understands the full impact of this merger, but I do know one this for sure. All Realtors need to be proactive on how they operate their business, making things happen instead of waiting for things to happen.

Interesting as I read A TON now that I can simply download a book. I love to read but never had the time to go to the store to purchase one. Now, I hope that part doesn't happen to real estate...where people simply find it more convenient to go it alone. I am curious how this will shake out!

As I said above, I do not know what the model would be for Zillow. There are so many options and choices the future can hold. However, while I prepare for the worst scenario I do not give up on the fact that there are many situations where agents could benefit immensely. It is a paradigm shift and many industries go through it. WHile the sky is very cloudy I certainly don't see it falling.

Jeff~ the sky is not falling "yet" but as you know there are no guaranties either. At any given moment an asteroid can come smashing down and change everything. I like saying "plan for the worst and hope for the best" and I have a feeling that's your take regarding this merger.

It is fair to say "in-time we will know" but until then we need to keep-up with what's going on around us. I know I am very vocal about this merger, but as you can tell I'm also very passionate about it too!

Jon - couldn't agree with you more. This was really focused on explaining that Amazon is not the bad guy in ebooks as implied. It is Apple and the publishers that are not playing fair. We should hope Zillow is not an Apple or worse. I always respect your opinions and greatly appreciate your comments.
