Choosing The Right Paint For Your Madison And Huntsville Alabama Home

In Madison and Huntsville Alabama as in other areas there are many newly constructed homes Choosing The Right Paint For Your Madison And Huntsville Alabama Homecoming on the market featuring the latest trends, features and paint colors.  I believe any home including existing homes should try to emulate current trends as they typically are what buyers are looking for.

When considering to list or if buying a new home choosing the right paint for your home presents many options.  Different parts of the country seem to favor color schemes that can differ dramatically from one area to another, the focus of this post will be the types of finish that can generally be applied somewhat universally.

There are six paint finishes to consider for various effects, textures, light reflective nature and utilitarian needs.

Matte Finish - This finish is also called a flat finish and does not reflect light well, tends to absorb light.  Typically chosen for walls and ceilings, matte paints are tougher to clean and mark easier.  Great choice for media rooms and living space as matte paints also hides wall or paint surface imperfections.

Flat Enamel Finish - adds a measure of durability and stands up to cleaning better than a matte finish.  Great for homes with children or higher use areas.

Eggshell Finish - Somewhat more durable and light reflective than either the matte or flat enamel finishes.  An eggshell finish works well in living rooms and dining rooms where a little more light reflectivity might be desired and also holds up to cleaning.

Satin Finish - Typically used on window and door trim as well as ceilings needing a more reflective surface.  Satin finishes also hold up well to cleaning, resisting stains an marks better and work well in higher moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Semi-gloss Finish - Another good choice for windows, doors and trim is a semi-gloss paint finish.  Adding another level of reflectivity, durability and cleaning ability this finish also works great in bath areas.  Keep in mind that as a paints' finish moves up the light reflective scale it also tends to accentuate any imperfections on the wall surface including a poorly applied paint.

Glossy Finish - This finish provides the most light reflective surface.  It creates a high gloss and smooth finish most used in cabinets and furniture.   Attention should be paid to preparation instruction of the manufacturer for best results.

This is a very informative post, Nick. I haven't paid much attention to paint in many years, but there are a lot of choices out there.

Nick this is a good break down of each type of paint.  I have owned a home for over 39 years and in that time I have probably used everyone of these finishes :)

Nick  I was at the swim club and over heard a group of men talking about what type of paint to use when repainting their homes . I was going to interrupt them and tell them I was a real estate agent and correct them with their choices . I thought twice when I heard another in the group making the right choice and one of the men bellowing at him that he was wrong . Great list of paint choices here !

Nick this is a very informative post.  I think all too often many people make wrong choices in choosing a paint or the paint finish.

Thank you for your comments, but in response to Maria's #5 comment: Maria, I'm not an expert, but about the time I bought my first investment property (late '70's) I ran a small painting and remodeling business with close friends.  We painted a lot of homes together so I do have a little experience in this area.  As always I much appreciate you stopping by! And thanks for the re-blog!

Fresh paint can be your best friend when it's time to sell, just be sure to keep it neutral, and apply these tips while you're at it.
