The Butterfly House

Chicken Hill Exhibit

Description: Exhibit about Chicken Hill and its development. At Setauket, the Chicken Hill neighborhood was a multi-national, multi-religious polyglot combining Eastern and Southern Europeans with Native Americans and African Americans. Its origins were mid-nineteenth century. It persisted until the early 1960’s when suburban development overtook the Three Villages.

SPIES! Exhibit

Description: Learn how a group of Long Island patriots helped George Washington win the revolution with a docent tour featuring simulating games, historical documents and records and tours. This interactive exhibit presents the little-known Culper Spy Ring that was active during the American Revolution from 1778 to 1781. George Washington suffered heavy losses at the beginning of the war for independence from the British. He soon realized that credible information about British troop movements was vital in preparing a successful campaign. After the capture of Nathan Hale, Washington asked Major Benjamin Tallmadge, his Chief of Intelligence, to organize a spy ring, now known as the Culper Spy Ring.

Down the Ways: The Wooden Ship Era Walking Tour

Description: Guided tour with historian Beverly Tyler explores the history of shipbuilding in Setauket, NY. Guests will learn about shipbuilders, ship captains, and families prominent in Setauket’s Maritime history. Discover how the shipbuilding industry influenced the development of roads and homes on Dyers Neck. This tour will be conducted at low tide so that the bones of the schooners will be uncovered in Scott’s Cove. This Three Village Historical Society walking tour is designed for students, families and adults. Please arrive 5 minutes prior to the start time listed to ensure a prompt start. Tour lasts approximately one and one half hours. All tours are $5. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time. No reservations are necessary.
