Almost every Sunday my daughter, Kela Caspillo, and I watch her God-daughter, Kayzia. We are always looking for new things to do with her, (besides going to different beaches). This last Sunday we decided to go to Allerton Gardens on the south side of Kauai. On Sunday Allertons offers a Kamaaina discount rate. We took advantage of the rate. Not only were there locals on our tour but we also had visitors from Japan & the Netherlands. The beginning of the tour starts with a scenic bus ride as it drives along the coast line in Poipu and goes inland towards Lawai. I was impressed with the beautiful views and the privacy of Allerton's Bay/Beach. Our tour guide Bob Nishek was very knowledgeable on the history of the gardens beginning from the time of Queen Emma, a Hawaiian Queen. The tour turned into a walking tour. Below are 2 short videos of the tour.
My favorite part of the tour was tasting and learning about the Miracle Berry Plant. We tasted the berry and then tasted the fresh picked key lime. The berry affects your taste buds and turns sour foods into sweet tasting. I saved and planted the seeds.
The walking tour ends at the beach, where the bus picks you back up. Although we enjoyed the tour, I don't recommend it for small children. Kayzia did enjoy herself, especially at the trees pictured above that were featured in the movie Jurassic Park, but it may be a little more educational then exciting for most children.
Allerton Gardens is part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden . Tours and information can be found on their site.
