I Tried To Tell You That The Retaining Wall

Was Going To Fail

Constructing a retaining wall will help in holding back soil from areas around buildings. Without these walls, the soil can erode and push up against the building and wood rot damage to the building over time. Of course the slope would also encourage the flow of water toward the building which can cause it's own problems.

If you are constructing or replacing a retaining wall it is important to hire someone who can do the job correctly. A general contractor with experience in building retaining walls will no that it is important to set the posts deep enough to withstand the force of the soil over time. Drainage rock is can help but it needs to be put in to help with moving the water away, not just filled in the back side of the wall.

This wall was installed by the lowest bidder. I had a chance to see the work being done and tried to warn that the wall was not going to last very long if it is built the way it was being done. Work continued until completion. This photo is taken less the a year from completion, it is already moving as a result of poor construction.

There is nothing wrong with looking for a good price in your home improvement projects, I would do the same thing. Let's not forget that finding someone who can do the job right needs to be high on the list of priorities. In Sacramento consider Tromler Construction for the construction or replacement of your retaining wall.

Good morning Tom,

I see more consumers go for the lowest bid because they don't understand they are paying for inferior workmanship and will get what they pay for! Excellent information for the consumer.

Good morning Tom. You have said it before but never better than today. You generally get what you pay for and the the first priority should always be hiring competence.

Good morning Tom,

When I have a contractor come the question becomes how and why are you doing the work; the one that explains the job best regardless of money gets the job.

Make yourself a great day.

There's nothing wrong with a low price, but we need to know what we are getting Dorie. Thanks for the comment this morning.

Uh Oh! I hope not too many Lenn.  :)

There does tend to be a correlation between price and performance Sheila.

I love this Raymond, make us explain it until you are convinced who knows what they are doing. Then you can compare prices if they're are enough remaining.  :)

Tom, I an not a big fan of wood retaining walls. Also it is much cheaper to do it right the first time.

When repairing these walls, we have to take into consideration all the other walls on the property Donald - they have to match.

Wow - I'm looking at the grade of the ground there, and I can see the building on the right side of the picture is looking pretty vulnerable for foundation damage, and also damage to the wood siding.  They needed a retaining wall built of something more substantial than wood I think.

All comes down to "you get what you pay for" Tom.  I knew you would know how it should become.

Tom- I think that some never quite get it and focus on how much they saved or the deal they felt they got.
