The Southern Pines Police Department has reported that "so far this year, overall crime is down 30% from the previous year." Break-ins and larcenies are down even more. The figures include crime statistics form the first two months of 2007 and 2008. March figures are not yet available.

There were 74 total crimes in the business area during the first two months of 2007, according to Police. That number has decreased to 50 this year. Also down are break-ins, burglaries and robberies. Vehicle break-ins are down 64% from 11 to 4 and Vandalism is down from 9 to 4.

Southern Pines Police Officers attribute the decreases to the increased presence of personnel and efforts to educate and remind the public about crime prevention tips to deter crimes of opportunity.
