Humble Beginnings
Cooper Rural High School , named after county board member George C. Cooper, opened its doors in 1936 as a consolidation of surrounding rural students. The first school building was an elementary and high school building located in the community of Woodrow, which still stands today. The first official Cooper School building opened two years later under B.M. Hays, the first superintendent of the district. Original class offerings included Vocational Agriculture for boys and Vocational Home Economics for girls.
Fast Forward
To meet the growing demand for academic excellence in a community environment in Southwest Lubbock, Lubbock-Cooper opened their second elementary school in 2002- Lubbock- Cooper North Elementary. In 2010, Lubbock-Cooper West Elementaty was opened to accommodate the again growing Southwest Lubbock area and its residents. Directly behind Lubbock-Cooper West Elementary, a popular neighborhood for young and growing families began to blossom- Lakewood Estates and Reunion Park. With the end of the population boom in Southwest Lubbock nowhere in sight, Lubbock-Cooper Central Elementary and the first middle school addition, Laura Welch Bush Middle School, opened their doors for the fall of 2011.
Looking Into The Future
Lubbock-Cooper ISD prides itself on a tradition of excellence and the maintenance of a hometown environment, despite the massive growth that has been experienced in the past decade. LCISD is a 3A district and continues to be recognized for both academic and athletic competitions. The district currently does not accept transfer students.
