Heavy rain this week could flood Bronxville basements and cause water damage ~ NY 10708

Bronxville may be on the "Highest Risk" line above, but we know it was named Pondfield Road for a reason!

Forecasters are predicting severe rainy weather tonight through tomorrow morning -- with 1 - 2 inches per hour falling on Westchester.  There is a flash flood watch for Bronxville and the whole County through Wednesday afternoon.  I have some tips below for you or anyone you know who finds water on a lower level or in their basement...hope it helps!

Plan to be home in your jammies with a good book or movie and glass of your fav beverage tonight.  I have to be at a meeting until 8p, but we have an All Wheel Subaru Outback and it lives for this stuff.  Either way, I'll stay off of the Parkways and take a "high road," like Route 22...it's on a ridge running north / south.

Like always, check your local forecast and even download the weather channel or accuweather apps, signing on for severe weather alerts.  Can you believe we get tornadoes in southern NY now??!  Your phone will alert you for severe storms, flooding and tornadoes -- for God's sake!  After Sandy, it's clear that climate change must be real.  Here's what you get on your phone with weather apps like Accuweather's version:

Weatherproof your day for free with these features:

• MinuteCast – minute-by-minute weather forecasts for the next two hours hyper-localized to your exact street address in the United States and Canada. Includes precipitation type and intensity, and start and end times for precipitation.
• For worldwide locations, when AccuWeather forecasts snow, ice, rain, wind, or the probability of thunderstorms, you’ll see an orange exclamation point displayed within the location’s current and 15-day screens.
• Push notifications for severe weather alerts in the United States.
• Homescreen widget displaying two-day forecasts with severe weather warnings for your GPS location, and a time clock. Resizable, multi-location widgets are also available with even more weather detail.
• Radar for all of North America and Europe, and worldwide satellite overlaying interactive Google Maps™ with a snapshot view of the maps for your saved locations.
• Current news and weather videos, with many available in both English and Spanish.
• Social media sharing so you can share your location’s current conditions, hourly, or 15-day forecasts using the social media apps you have on your device.

Last, if you flood or have water in your basement / finished lower level, it's important to get it dried and disinfected right away.  That's especially true if you have children playing down there and it's water from the road, under doorways or runoff from a lawn or backyard that may have been fertilized.

Here are some do's and don'ts / tips to not make a bad situation worse after the flood. Companies like ours will come in for free and see if you need pros or can just clean a water damage yourself!

System Advantages
  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.

  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.
System Advantages

Debbie:  Exactly, and I just offer tips in case there is runoff that enters a lower level.  We have had clients put down the NY Times to soak water off of carpet and the ink transferred.  Then they would need to call YOU for new rugs!

Hillary - I plan to be home tonight.  I am there now and will carefully plan my route tomorrow staying off the parkways.
