I recently visited my friend Heather Mehra-Pedersen at her upscale B&B Talus Rock. For the better part of a decade I've been hosting and cooking for the Winemaker's Dinner at the Festival at Sandpoint Grand Finale. We were meeting at Heather's retreat to finalize plans.
Let me tell you right here before you read further, there is nothing else like Talus Rock in Sandpoint or Bonner County. It really is extraordinary.
Like many projects, TRR had it's rocky start. I was a REALTOR for Sotheby's then, and all too familiar with the road. Disgruntled neighbors, governmental road blocks, and the very real chance that this fantastic property might not come to fruition.
That was 2010, and there was a bevy of articles detailing their travails.
Flash forward to 2013. While the Bonner County Daily Bee had been the first to report the negatives of the B&B, this article shows a sea change in attitude: Talus Rock Retreat offers oasis of tranquility, elegance. Published the Summer of '13, it shows a community embracing the new business. Let's be clear. In 2010, many if not the majority of Sandpoint and Dover residents still believed their properties to be insular and thought their values much higher than the economy was indicating. Coldwater Creek was still our Billion $ cash cow, and attitudes were smug. Three years later, Coldwater Creek was on the verge of bankruptcy, and, like the rest of the country, Sandpoint and Bonner residents were feeling the pinch of the new economic outlook, which was pretty grim.
Still isn't a bright outlook for the future of our region, but growth has returned, though at a pace which is nominal.
Heather and husband Bruce had built the home in 2008, and it is often booked at 100% throughout the year.
The day we were there, we saw a young couple walking the grounds. Heather called out to them and asked, "Did she say yes?"
I think it is wonderful, and as hosts the Pedersens shine, showcasing the amenities of Talus Rock in bright example. But you decide for yourself.

I took several pictures while I was there. See for yourself.
By the way, about the young couple, she did.
