I'm Going To Be On House Hunters!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Amerivest Realty

Well, an upcoming TV appearance seems reason enough to revive the blog, right?

In case you haven’t heard; I’m going to be on HGTV’s House Hunters!  (Did you know that’s the #1 ranked show on HGTV?!?!)

In mid-July, my buyer-clients filled out a general casting application on HGTV’s website.  They were then contacted to fill out a full application, release forms, and submit an audition video.  In turn, I had to complete release forms, fill out an application – which asked questions about our geographic area, our current market conditions, and what it was like to work with Jordan and Dawn.  And, then…. I had to make an audition video.

I was given instructions to stand during my video – and to keep it between 2-3 minutes long.  With my old Flip camera – I was a savvy video-editing machine, but (at least I’ve been led to believe that)the Flip software is now defunct.  So, I broke out my newer camera – and was determined to get through my entire 2-3 minute talk without needing to do any editing.  Laura patiently filmed many takes (one in which I referred to my buyers as Jawn and Dordan) before I said, “Good enough!” and attempted to upload my video to the designated HGTV video receiving portal.  Which… of course involved using technology, which is my enemy…

After trying several times to upload my video (and fearing that I was going to look like an idiot for having (without my knowing) successfully shared it five times), I made my first nervous phone call to an HGTV producer.  I was instructed to just upload my video to YouTube… where it has remained.  If you’re curious to see what a 'winning' HGTV audition video looks like, this link will solve that mystery:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVa8U-b0UOc&list=UUrOJRKGushuVIOlmaaetC-A&index=5

I emailed the HGTV producers the link to my YouTubed audition video on July 29th – and instantly received an email saying that our episode would be pitched to network executives later that week.

Tentative filming dates were discussed – which I’m sure is all accounted for when our episode is being pitched.  It’s a little unnerving to think about a conference table full of people watching my little video – discussing all the pros and cons of taking a chance on the nerdy Realtor that has a lot of books.  (The image that comes to mind is that of the Harvard admission department watching Elle Woods’ video application in Legally Blonde…)

On August 6th we received an email saying that the network was just waiting for approval from one more executive.  And, on August 8th we received the “You’ve Been Approved!” email along with more release forms to complete.

Stepping back in time a little bit… this wasn’t the first time that buyers of mine have applied to be on the show.  (They do this unprovoked by the way... I don't go around begging all of my clients to apply to be on reality TV.)  I had one other couple that made it as far as communicating with a producer, but the timing that the show needs for filming just didn’t work for them.  Here’s where I’ll pull back the curtain a little bit:

To be on House Hunters you need to either be under contract on the house you’re buying – or gasp – you need to have recently closed on your new house, but not yet moved in.   You also need to still have access to your previous home.  And, really - the show prefers the buyers to have full access to both their new home and their previous home for a span of several weeks...  I guess there may be some exceptions to this rule….  (I’ve been watching On Demand episodes of House Hunters to study-up a little bit, and I don’t remember seeing the couple’s previous home on the last episode I watched…)  At any rate, my buyers were under contract when we started this process, but have since closed on their new home.

I’ll go into more detail as our first filming days are rapidly approaching.

I think I’m most anxious about the next step - choosing which outfits to wear…

Thanks again for all the support.  I am largely terrified at the moment:)  We've had some scheduling obstacles, but we're on track for our first day of filming on Wednesday!  I edited my post a little bit... I wrote that kind of late at night, and was disappointed in how I explained a few things when I re-read it the next morning...  At any rate, I've got a few 'real life' deals to work on first, but then I'm hoping to write a new post later today.
