Back to School in Camas - Still “Pee Chee” after all these Years!
You’ve got to remember the Pee Chee folders from our school days. Each year we’d head back to class with the pale yellow folders, unmarked and crisp. By years end, the corners would be tattered and a variety of scribbles and doodles marred the front and back cover. “I love Mike,” or “Mike’s a mean boy," as crushes would come and go.
History Lesson on the Pee Chee.
Don’t lose interest, this history lesson is going to be short. Pee Chee folders were first produced in 1943 to help students store their papers safely inside two interior vertical pockets. The name originated from the folder’s color, a peachy-yellow hue.
It makes me happy to see Pee Chees alive and well, all these years later. Although, in my humble opinion, today’s version is a little less cool than when I was in school. They now come in five colors, but the look and feel of the folders isn’t quite the same.
Flimsy is how some on-line reviewers use to describe them. Other comments were from consumers longing for the original peachy Pee Chee - with the same nostalgic illustrations, color, and style. Regardless, they’re still around and the inside pockets work the same. Plus, doodlers and scribblers can deface the outside covers.
Camas families are buying School Supplies, including paper folders.
The school year in Camas begins on September 2nd, 2014. Local stores have their shelves stocked with all the back-to-school items a student normally needs - paper, notebooks, pens and pencils. However, you’ll have a hard time finding Pee Chees.
The Mead Corporation does have them for sale at their on-line site for $1.25 a folder. Although they do look a little different, and cost a bit more, than when I went to school. They are also now called a Mead®Color Talk - Pee-Chee Folder.
Most of us have fond memories of a trip to the store in late summer with our school supply lists in hand. Such a bittersweet feeling of summer’s end, and the excitement of seeing old friends and meeting new teachers.
To make your back-to-school shopping less hectic, here’s a list of the recommended supplies from the Camas School District. You won’t find a Pee-Chee folder on a list, anywhere. Oh well, that’s life and it's still pretty peachy.
