Throwback Thursday: Let's Get Dirty

Cleaning up from making mud pies in the 50sWhen I was young, my playground was the farm and open land.  My cousin and I made some exquisite mud pies - rolled in the stuff - got disgustingly dirty and have survived. (This photo depicts how our Moms made us "clean up" before coming inside the house).

Today, we see mulch and concrete everywhere, and rarely see children playing outside.  It seems to me, children of my generation (the 50s), growing up in the country, did not suffer nearly as much from allergies compared to children today.

Our immune system is all about “training” and “learning” and nature is the best training ground there is.  Mud puddles may not be the answer, but we sure do need to “let those kids get dirty.”

Ed, It seems today, parents do not encourage outdoor play, it's easier to let them watch TV.

Bob, Even today, I can't help but peel off those garden gloves and get my hands in the dirt!

Bette, well,  I remember growing up building castles in the sand!

True, where is the mud now?

Very honest post! If kids today spent less time in front of the TV they may handle the elements a little better!

Praful, If I lived near the sand today, without a doubt I would be building sand castles.

I have thought often on this.  We're we not playing in somewhat an area we would be heading as an adult? Heavy industry, building, construction.  Are not the kid's of today just playing with where their future lies?   99% of elementary school kids can out do me on any techno device.  Phone, pad, computer.  Most likely not because they were playing in the dirt.  Don't get me wrong though...would enjoy nothing more today than a roll down a hill wedged in an old tire.  Lol

Brian, It's a proven fact, children need more exposure to the elements to boost their immunity.

Mark, You are correct in that the reason children today are computer savvy, and didn't get that way by playing outside all the time.

When I think back - the kids whose Mom's kept everything "sanitary" and didn't allow them to get dirty were the ones who were constantly sick. On the other hand, there was a family down the road that lived in utter filth, and those kids were never sick.

Aside from physical health - getting outside and using imagination instead of toys goes a long way toward mental health and well being. When I think of the "forts" we built in the woods with sticks - and jungle paths we made through meadow grasses... we didn't need toys when we had nature to entertain us.

At night we were physically tired - not suffering from eye strain from staring at a screen all day.

Making mud pies, what fun!  I don't think kids get to do that much anymore. They are far too wired to tech gadgets.  When I was a kid I had a special area of the yard that was dedicated to mud pie making.  I liked decorating mine with flower blossoms.  What about you?

Good morning Bette. Well said and I agree. No one ever died of a little dirt and in my mind it is good for the soul too.

I remember those days in the 50s. Mud pies, running free in the hills until my mom rang a cowbell to tell us it was time to come home, climbing trees with book in hand and hanging out. Good memories of a more carefree age.

Bet, We don't see play outside like we used to unless it is a birthday party or organized sports. I miss those times. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Hi Bette, When I was growing up as a child, we had the run of the County. We jumped on our bikes and off we would go.  Today kids jump into the chair and turn on the computer games and off they go.  Not quite the same anymore.

Bette - Looks like my childhood on the farm, too!  I still like to play in dirt sometimes (and I would probably still climb trees if there were any good climbing trees on my property).
