When I was young, my playground was the farm and open land. My cousin and I made some exquisite mud pies - rolled in the stuff - got disgustingly dirty and have survived. (This photo depicts how our Moms made us "clean up" before coming inside the house).
Today, we see mulch and concrete everywhere, and rarely see children playing outside. It seems to me, children of my generation (the 50s), growing up in the country, did not suffer nearly as much from allergies compared to children today.
Our immune system is all about “training” and “learning” and nature is the best training ground there is. Mud puddles may not be the answer, but we sure do need to “let those kids get dirty.”
