What to look for when selecting an agent?

How to pick an agent? We know that buyers and sellers alike are asking themselves all the time, how do I find a good real estate agent?  We say, interview several if you need to and go to work with the agent that you feel comfortable with that has demonstrated they have some knowledge about the town and community.  Depending on what your personal needs and goals are with a real estate investment, your need for a different type of agent may vary.  More times than not it's always a plus to work with an agent that has experience in the business.  If they've lived in the city or town for a number of years, it's an added plus.  You're in essence, looking for professional help and assistance, especially in the area you are not familiar with such as the contracts, paperwork and details about neighborhoods you might not be aware on your own.  Do they offer a simple yet complete search of the local MLS ( search the Las Vegas area MLS system )  or is the customer forced to go out to the internet and look at several different sites and locations to get the information they are looking for?

JC & Matt: Great blog and all you stated is extremely valid. Unfortunately, so many buyers just view the agent as a tour guide equipped to unlock a door, without considering all the value-added services we can offer.
