They're talking about YOU Behind Your Back...

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

They're talking about YOU on Agent Genius a national real estate blog!

bikini They've even got a photo of you... in a skimpy swimsuit... WOW... look at those legs, look at that tummy... Oh excuse me...I guess that's the Fonz in the 1950's version of a Speedo and a black leather jacket. They (Agent Genius) are talking about ActiveRain... not a particular person on ActiveRain.

Jonathan Dalton wrote  "Jumped The Shark? [Active Rain]"

Jonathan Dalton is an ActiveRain member... an inactive ActiveRainer. Jonathan  last wrote on ActiveRain on  08/22/2007   Have We Disappeared? No Way ... Come Visit Us!  You can visit Jonathan (and his dog Tobey... ) on his Dalton's Arizona Homes blog. Jonathan wrote about ActiveRain "jumping the shark" on that blog previously.

What do people in the real estate blogosphere think about ActiveRain?   Do you care?  Some comments about ActiveRain are supportive, others are not. Rich J.  stopped by to comment.  One of my favorites is from Kim Woods:

Simply put, I like to describe AR as my nest. I 'grew up' there and learned about blogging and was introduced to some great people.

I left my nest a couple of months ago to my outside blog, but I return now and again. I hope I always will.

I met Kim on Twitter... I believe after she started another blog.

Some of the comments on Jonathan's Agent Genius post are from less active or inactive ActiveRainers say why they have become less active or inactive on ActiveRain.  Some because of the whole Move.com  thing and concerns about ownership of content,  some because of the "great post, thanks for sharing it" type comments, others because of ALL the spamming... and some for more personal reasons.

Do you like points?  Are the points the root of all evil?  Should those who are not participating on ActiveRain mind their own business about ActiveRain points being the root of all evil, etc?  Or is it constructive criticism?  Can you do anything to change the perception of others about ActiveRain?

We get involved when we can to the extent that we can. We have had some good results of contacts, but not as much as some other people seem to rave about. Jumped the shark? ... we would not say that, perhaps our expectations are different than some other people ... but we are happy and think that the A/R boys and girls are doing a good job.

It wasn't April Fools! .... Here I am, back home for a visit :) I'm guilty about talking about AR as well as JDALT. However, I *send* people here. I think its a wealth of information (yes, it hides a little more with junk posts) for agents to absorb. Thank you AR for raising me in the blog world. For nurturing, encouraging, feeding -- and for releasing me to venture off on my own -- and welcoming me back with Open Arms anytime I want to return !!!! Nice post getting conversation flowing, Maureen. I'm so happy we've been getting to know each other! @KimWood

I am fairly new to AR (within the last month) and while I am just learning the ins and outs of it I have to say that the point system is interesting to me now, as a newbie. Simply for the reason that the point system and the rankings in my own market have intrigued me enough to stick around and enjoy blogging. Before AR I would read a blog now and again, comment rarely but now I truly do realize the wealth of information from them and I believe it has already turned into addiction for me.

I leave the so-called "meaningless, great post, thanks for sharing " comments that you talk about but they are far from meaningless to me. If I say, "great post, thank you for sharing" I truly mean it and there is something in the blog that will benefit me in some way or else I simply just read it and go on without a comment.

As far as the junk post...don't read them. Simple. There is way too many great, informative post to be wasting your time reading those. Just over look them and do what you came here to do, network, learn & grow.

^^Thank you, Misty - my point about the "Nice post" comments is that you really don't KNOW the motivation behind it unless you've been stalking the commenter - sometimes I have nothing more brilliant to say than "Nicely done - great job!"  and shoot, on AR that won't get me any points anyway, since there is a 10 word minimum...

I guess the authors want to you go into more detail as to why you thought the post was interesting or well done - and that reminds me too much of literature class, which made my head hurt.  Just let me read and enjoy.  LOL

Yep, I'm sometimes a lazy thinker, or lazy typist, and would rather say "Kudos, good job" than "Wow, what a timely and relevant post - I especially appreciated how you brought the heart of the matter to the forefront leaving no room for doubt what your excellent point was..."

They both say the same thing - only thing is one is easier to type and quicker to read.

LOL

Kim I thought your comment was classy...

So many people seem to have to find a reason not to participate (here or elsewhere.) With ActiveRain it's  Move.com. what others are doing on ActiveRain, a slight to them on ActiveRain, an ActiveRain  bully,   the copyrighted content, people not commenting on their outside blog... but commenting on their AR blog.  As if you have to come up with a reason.... and you need to lobby others to join you in your crusade...

For those in the thread (or on AG) who fret about what others are writing, (or just cutting and pasting ) and in particular newbies who have a problem with non real estate on ActiveRain.  This post is not real estate.  Is it OK?  Is it OK with you if we discuss social media on ActiveRain?  Or just real estate social media?   I don't believe there has ever been a change in the categories below... since I have been a member (8-2006... oh ok I joined in July but did not participate until August 2006) ) there was always a place for "off topic, humor, etc." on ActiveRain.  Not your 'cup of tea'?  Move along and read something that interests you.

Don't like something on ActiveRain?  Don't read it.  It's as simple as that.  I don't  like a lot of what I see on ActiveRain but I don't have to read it.  I think ActiveRain would be a better place without jokes but I am against banning any legal content on AR.  I think the reader (any reader) can discern what is suitable for them to read.

Karen I don't read the jokes either... I hate it when someone posts email garbage, I just don't read it.

Karen said " What I dislike about AR is some of the technical stuff, like the clumsy way you have to switch back and forth from HTML to WYSIWYG and I'd love to be able to subscribe to the groups I join so that I get an email when someone posts a new blog to a particular group."

I don't want any more emails but I guess I would not have to... the switching back and forth between  HTML to WYSIWYG is clumsy.  Is your other blog a WP.org?   I sometimes have more trouble on my WP.org blog (ColumbusBestBlog.com) than I do here.  RealTown (my Discover Columbus blog is an RT blog) is clunky in so many ways but they have done a better job with  the "HTML to WYSIWYG" as long as I remember the sequence of which buttons to push...  but in most ways their blog layout is not as intuitive for new bloggers IMHO so I would not suggest a never posted a blog before kind of person try RT blogs first.  I started on one in August 2005 and am still posting there but recommend AR over RT despite the clunkiness of the "HTML to WYSIWYG" because it is so minor.

Ann It's like RealTalk... lots of educational value if you can wade through the swamp..  or how RealTalk used  to be.  I don't read it anymore.

Thanks all for the comments and discussion.

Maureen - my other blog is a Wordpress.com blog, rather than a .org.  After reading Chris Griffith's Tweets last night lamenting the issues she was having with her blog, I think I'll stick to the .com one!  ha ha!

There are things that I prefer about the Wordpress.com blog - I like being able to make my blog more of a website.  switching from HTML to WYSIWYG is easy - but there are things about Wordpress.com I dislike too (mainly the inability to embed an RES virtual tour).

I love AR, warts and all.  I think it's an excellent place to get started...

Karen, does RES use Javascript? I have never used WP.com but I am going to start  blog there... I think.  Non RE.   When I have time... I have it penciiled in for October...

I think the embed code IS javascript.  I've emailed Jeff Turner and he said that Wordpress.com only allows certain things to be embedded (for example a YouTube video) but not others...and RES is not one of them, which is a bummer for  me as I want RES not YouTube.  LOL

Overall though, I like WP.com.

I consider myself new to AR and blogging in general. Have learned alot, have a hard time remembering all the details of how to insert pics, bold script etc.  My question is, when does everyone find the time to post and comment and read all the responses?

Mary Jo - jumping in here - I have been more active the past few days because I've found myself in "lull" with my IRL (In real life) stuff.  I have three properties in pending and now we're just waiting to close, I'm waiting for a signed contract from buyers - I wrote up the contract yesterday in between Twittering and Blogging - and I also do a lot of this stuff late at night when sensible people would be sleeping.

Previous to Monday, I hadn't even looked at my blogs in a month!

I think people just change over time. They change what they want, what they want to focus on, etc... Unfortunately, everyone isn't going to like the same thing all the time. It happens and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Personally, I'm not very active on A/R, but I really enjoy reading and learning.  If I have a question, I can always post it here and usually get some great responses.  It's definitely not about the points for me.

I just noticed Melina's comment about the shoes. When I asked about the points the first day or so I was active on ActiveRain... after I had invited a bunch of people (that's where all of my points are from) Kristal Kraft told me we could trade the points in for shoes?

AR got me yesterday with the post about points.... I fell for it... I read the whole thing, I was at the bottom of it, just before reading the first comment before I realized it was an April Fool's Day joke.  I was not alarmed at the loss of points...

Thanks all for the comments. Kaen thanks for jumping in and answering Mary Jo's question.

Great article - I think it just adds more value to AR when we stay connected with other blogs outside AR even when they are negative!  One of the commenters on that blog had an excellent suggestion - why not hold monthly contests in states/markets for bloggers to write about the market?

Agent Genius and Jonathan like to publicize ActiveRain.

Maureen~ You always bring up the great subjects:) I love AR for many of the same reasons, its how I can learn real estate from some of the best of the best. I credit AR for giving me a voice in the virtual assistant industry, and helping my little ol' website out a long the way. It's not the same as it was back in late '06, but i still love it:)
