Real Estate magic?Good Samaritan work? Lessons from Harry Houdini & Mr. Rogers

Harry Houdini. That guy just never quit.Something that is said over and over when his name is mentioned. Tenacity and determination. Two words that can drive a person to focus and concentrate on doing the best they can, and accomplishing the things that others say cannot be accomplished. I have to believe if someone looked at Harry Houdini in the eyes and said "you can't do it" it would only make a person like him that much more motivated and determined. It is a mindset that we all strive for.

Sooner or later as individuals we come to a point of frustration. At least I do. I want to be better and more productive, but human nature talks us into being procrastinators. I do believe that successful people sacrifice time away from other things, I do believe that successful people do things that others put of, or may not want to do. The hardest thing for me is to walk into the doors in the morning and say to myself;

Today is going to be my best day ever!

Today, I am going to lead by example!

It is easy to carry daily baggage with us all the time, but it is really hard to let it stay out side and say you will pick it up later. Let's face it, time is a huge commodity in out Industry, and everyday that goes by does not allow us to go back and repeat that day. That day is gone, it is over. Why not really compromise with yourself and say "I may not have the ability to go crazy for six hours, but I will for two hours. This time could be contact management that is put off, calling old spheres, Thank You cards, analyzing the way you do business, prospecting and more. It requires a strict code of time management and discipline. I believe that consistency and lack of talent will always outweigh all the talent in the World with no consistency. In other words, if you don't do what you need to such as picking up a phone and calling old customers, even if it is two a day, and calling for future business, one day you come in with little to do.

Do you think that Harry Houdini did not have a game plan? Do you think he was not focused and determined? He sure was! He was on a mission and with deep passion. Is that really any different from wanting to be better, and more productive and profitable in our Industry. It is really taking a step back and looking at the big picture.

You have to dare to be different, and want to personally make a change for yourself, not just others!

With that I really have a major lesson to learn from Mr. Rogers as well. Say what you want to about the man but he had the nerve to leave Hollywood when he was the stage manager for Gabby Hayes. He just did not like the direction that television was going for children, and wanted to make a difference. Again, a sheer desire and determination to focus and adopt a habit to be the best he could in the eyes of children, and examples for adults as well. I have a lot of respect for any one that gets up and sings a song for Congress. He would say such things to kids as go get your parents we are going to talk about the word assassination. This was done after Bobby Kennedy was shot. I remember reading an article once about a woman that was abused by her father as a young child. All she could do was to go in another room and turn on Mr. Rogers. He was always an inspiration to say "Remember you are something special" That alone kept the woman going.

We as Realtors want to make a difference. We strive for good morals,ethics, convictions, and honesty. If it is not 100% when we get in this business our eyes do get opened for the need to live by a code, and also do our best. Fred Rogers was also a Presbyterian Minister as well, and made a vow to never deviate from his standards for his love of children. He died with leaving a legacy that will always be an Institution in Public broadcasting.

 

We always try to be our best, but again, we are only human. A suggestion? When frustration gets into the arena, and you are at a stand still, seek out a mentor that you can work with. You would be surprised at the number of people that are really in a position to make your life, and business better. You never know unless someone. I have been doing this for some time. I constantly reach out and have people critique me in a unbiased way. I learn from it, and you certainly owe it to yourself to better yourself. Have you ever looked at other Brokers and say "I wish I could be like them?" The truth is it is in you, you just need to pull it out, look at it, plan with it, gear yourself for positiveness, and do not let people rip on your or condemn you. Unfortunately, I have learn that the more successful you are there are people in the wings that want to see you fall. What is that all about? I would like to think people should extend a hand and say to you"I would like to help you if you ever need it.

Look up at your plan, refine it, tell yourself you are now at the point of wanting to excel. When in doubt, call me.There is nothing you cannot accomplish with the right mind frame. Absolutely nothing!!!

With that have your best day ever, lead by example, and have yourself a productive day!!
