New Braunfels Events: Fairs and Festivals in and by New Braunfels 2014

School began today in New Braunfels, and that means summer is coming to a close. While that may mean cooler tempetures, we are aren't cooling down the fun! There are a plethora of fairs and festivals like the well-known Comal County Fair and Wurstfest but there is also the Annual Gruene Music and Wine Fest, the Texas Clay Festival, the Turkey Trot, the Texas Book Festival and more!

Wurstfest

Comal County  Fair and Rodeo – September 19th-28th

Nothing says it is Fair time like the kick off of the Comal County Fair and Rodeo, now in its 120thyear! A classic county fair, there is a carnival, rodeo, fair queens and FOOD, FOOD, FOOD! A true community event, many locals business shut down on Friday, or Parade Day as the locals call it, to join in the parade that features kids and adults from businesses to band and everything in between! A true New Braunfels favorite and one of the oldest traditions. Trust me when I say, there is something for EVERYONE at this fair! From the classics to the more unusual: do you have a kid who wants to wrangle a pig or ride a mutton, or face off against a tractor pull? Perhaps you want to take your hearty appetite to the chili or BBQ cook off or the pizza eating contest. Have a hobby? There's a contest to make sure you are the best at what you do including: agriculture, antiques and heirlooms, arts and photography, baking, canning and food preservation, hand crafting and wood working, handwork, knitting, crocheting and sewing, home brews, wines, oils and vinegar, horticultre, poultry, wildlife, hay (yes, hay), school and group projects AND shoebox floats. Learn about farming while holding baby animals. There is a true can't miss event and the pride of New Braunfels.

28th Annual Gruene Music and Wine Fest – October 9th-12th

Benefitting the United Way, the Annual Gruene Music and Wine Fest features some of the best music, food, and wine in Texas. Four fun filled days where all events take place in the historic Gruene Hall and The Grapevine Vineyard in downtown Gruene.

22st Annual Texas Clay Festival – October 25th-26th

A nod to the more creative types in our community, the Annual Texas Clay Festival features potters and sculptors showcasing and selling there one-of-a-kind art as well as teaching the public a thing or two about their trade. A true family friendly event, this festival is free and features hands on activities for the kiddos. Come on out and support the local arts!

There will be readings, presentations, panel discussions, book signing, cooking demonstrations, live music, local food and vendors from around the state! A great place to support literacy, authors and libraries and fun for the whole family!

Texas Teen Book Festival - October 18th

This one day event has really picked up since it's modest beginnings in a high school in 2009. Taking place this year at St. Edward's University in Austin, this festival promotes reading and writing by connecting Texas teens with some of today's hottest writers. There is a game show, book signings, panel discussions, two writing workshops and so much more. This years authors include James Dashner, Scott Westerfield, Marie Lu, Lauren Oliver and more! If you have a teenage bookworm like we do, we'll see you there!

Wurstfest – November 7th-16th

The 10 Day Salute to Sausage is another New Bruanfels favorite and well-known tradition. There is awesome music, traditional dress, performances, excellent beers and more fried food than should be contained in any one area! A can’t-miss event, see more information in this blog post .

Downtown Lighting of the Tree – November 21th

What better way to get into the spirit of the holidays than the lighting of the tree in downtown New Braunfels! Small town living at its finest. I promise no one will judge you if you feel the need to break out in a chorus of “Welcome Christmas.” (Kelle may or may not do that every year ;) )

24th Annual Turkey Trot – Thanksgiving Day, November 28th

If you are ready to burn off some of the calories accumulated in the previous festivals AND support a great cause, the Turkey Trot is the place to do it! Held outside of the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, there is a timed and untimed 5 mile run, a one mile walk and a Kid’s K. There is also an art contest in the for this years logo - winner recieves a year of free subs! Be sure to enter by September 6th! All proceeds from the Turkey Trot go to Caritas of Austin, a charity that supports Austin's working poor and homeless people.

Wassailfest – December 4th

Perhaps lesser known, Wassailfest is another highly anticipated festival in New Braunfels. Local business fire up a friendly competition and provide some of the most delicious and unique wassails around. While nothing is more family friendly than a stroll around downtown in the crisp winter evening, there will be samplings of wassail for the 21 and up crowd. Be sure to fill out your form for the best and turn it in at the end of the evening!
