Minnesota is one of only three states that mandate a post-Labor Day school session start, now many Minnesota schools are considering or have implemented later hours for starting school each day.
At least 20 percent of high school students fall asleep on a typical day. True!
Never happened in my high school. But we only had 15 to 18 kids per year graduating, too.
Later Start Times for High School Students....Does It Make Sense?
Teenagers need about nine hours of sleep each night, experts say. And with perhaps an after-school job, practices, lessons, homework, the video games and the internet, how can they get that much?
With great parental or guardian control over their activities, in my humble opinion.
But, some students report less depression with later start times and some school have noted fewer dropouts in the schools with later start times.
Is this the new normal? And, if it will be, how will working parents or guardians cope with kids that aren’t even out of bed by the time they have to leave for their jobs?
What’s your opinion? Do you think later start times make sense? Or can we adjust the kids to a better schedule and not try to jam so many activities and obligations on them?
Might be a good question for your next Parent-Teacher Conference or PTA meeting!
