Round Them Up With A Quarter

Shopping Delaware CountyRun away shopping carts are the norm in many supermarket parking lots. They can take up parking spaces and can cause damage to parked cars.  Rounding up these run away carts is usually a job for an employee of the supermarket.

So here comes a new supermarket chain into Delaware County, Aldi, and they have an alternative way to round up carts, make customers use a quarter to use a cart.

A very simple idea but it works!

You put a quarter in the devise attached to the hand rail and voila! you have a free moving cart to do your shopping.  When you exit the store you simply push a devise into another cart and you get your quarter back!

I first experienced this idea when I lived in Canada many years ago.  The local supermarket had this money exchange in place and there were no carts floating around the parking lot.  Glad to see it is catching on here in the states.

Now how to stop carts from ending up in a ravine a mile away???

I have shopped at Aldi and have experienced The Quarter Deposit idea. It works and will most likely keep people from strolling the carts all the way to their homes; and t hen ditching the cart.

Hi Sussie, I think you are right about the quarter stopping the long distance cart.

Thanks for stopping by!

This is a great idea.  Where I do my grocery shopping, half the parking spots are usually taken up by carts - one of my biggest pet peeves is people too lazy to put them back (especially with the dozens of cart returns throughout the lot).

A friend of ours just had his car messed up by a cart in a parking lot that was on a hill. Not a good thing.  Yes people just don't seem to care.  Maybe this will catch on.

Hi Mike, They are a no frills supermarket that focuses mostly on edibles and some dry goods.  You can save some money if you are okay not using name brand products. Hit or miss on things in dry goods. You need to bring your own bags and cash/debt only. Their prices on most veggies and fruit are good.  We like their pizzas because they have unusual toppings and are not too large. We've gotten bird seed/suet real cheap, but they are not regular items. We have not been disappointed with anything so far. Their staff is limited so lines can back up if you go during a rush. It is a place we visit here and there like we do with Trader Joe's. Worth a visit for sure.

Hope your summer was good.

Hi Gloria,

This is a great idea unless people try to steal your basket...ha ha. I hate to see baskets all over the parking lots and I usually push one in for my use instead of getting it inside as once in a while there are none inside!! Also this would cut down on theft of baskets too. We as consumers pay the costs as the retailer has to buy more carts. I think this is a terrific idea and hope it catches on everywhere.

They have a store in Germantown, MD. I had to learn how to work the carts when we went shopping. Another surprise was that they do not take credit cards or checks....only cash or debit cards.
