I'm Counting on You!

 

Pretty weighty words from a client when heading out for the start of a home search.

 

I helped this buyer purchase a condo some years ago - he was living overseas and almost all the communication was via email. We never met but the transactions went swimmingly.

 

I finally met hm the other day, upon a visit to the states with plans to sell the condo, and purchase a home to live in because of a job transfer and relocation to the San Diego area.

 

It's easy to overlook how meaningful the simple things we sometimes do for our clientsThese words made evident the level of trust I had earned thus far, but also signify the tremendous impact we have on people's lives when buying and selling. The role we play for the time we are involved in a home purchase or sale, and beyond, is far more significant that we sometimes realize. 

 

And perhaps that's true from the perspective of our clients, too, even though they may not know it at the time.

 

Our role is not just helping them buy or get rid of a car, or furniture.  

 

It's helping them find a place to call home, to build a life, enjoy friends and family, and surround themselves 24/7 with people and things they love, perhaps for many years.  We hear the excitement, the anxiety, the pain as they transition. And we are often involved in significant shifts in the family as these moves takes place, anticipated or not.

 

"I'm counting on you" are words not to be taken lightly.

But they are wonderful to hear!

75% of my sales are to out of state investors who never see the property. Of course it helps that purchases are based on return on investment data but paper can lie and results do not. It does place a responsibility on you and you have to be willing to accept that, but the rewards are great.

Ted - true, and it's important that we remain aware of this at all times with our clients

Jared - I have had a few as well. As long as the buyers are comfortable and understanding their responsilities, too, it can work well. Sometimes there is little choice

Thanks Gabe - commented on this again today, too, while we were out looking at home.

Sharon - well we are not transaction agents here in CA so we do have a significant role. And it's just the right thing to do anyhow

Sheila - the trust clients palce in us really is paramount

The ones that truly appreciate the things that we do, make all the ones that don't seem that much more insignificant.  For the most part, I think that my past clients would not only use me again, but continue to recommend me to others that they know.  Trust is not built over night and you are right, when someone says that they are "counting on you", it is not to be taken lightly.  Great post.

Gary - we deal with it every day so it is more commonplace, but it's a big deal for our clients who my be doing this for the very first time

Margaret - that's such a good point. Being depended upon IS the root of what we do (as is true of other service providers). 

Richie - some perhaps do not give it as much thought and concern as they should

Suzanne - very true. Even though we know people count on us it's nice to know they recognize nice that as being important to them also

Raul - "repeat business is not a guarantee, it is earned." Really like what you said and it's so true

Norma - I suspect we often don't think about how significant a life impact it is for each client we work with

Eric - indeed it is a great place to be. BUt I also trust him from past experience and that makes the relationship in this new venture a wonderful thing

Sharon - I believe so. And it was mutual. but I suspect that even if people don't voice it they ARE counting on us, right?

Kathleen - I was in a different situation for sure, but I said the same thing to my surgeon who did the double hernia op. Yep, what we do DOES have a significant impact, and we can really screw things up if we don't do our jobs well

Gerard - either way our clients are counting on us to help them achieve their goal

Tammy - ditto. Who wouldn't be?!

Kevin - ah, yes, we do occasionally get one of those. Nice to have the great transactions in the majority

Jeff,

Most clients don't tell us in such clear terms, but it's true.  Rare and unusual is the case where the client doesn't really care what we do for them.  In most cases, I find the clients don't realize how much they've put into our hands until after te transaction, sometimes 2-3-5 years after do they realize what impact we had.  Sellers will figure it out sooner, though again it can be a year or two.  Hearing a horror story from someone else they know will also make them realize they had a good agent, and I've gotten those thank you calls too which are fun.
