Happy Belated National Dog Appreciation Day

National Dog Appreciation Day on August 26th has been celebrated every year since 2004.  The purpose of the holiday is to show appreciation for the millions of the dogs in the U.S. that keep us safe and bring us comfort and companionship. We must not forget the dogs who are service animals and work for the police departments.

Here are 13 suggestions:

  1. Adopt a dog from your local shelter or pure breed rescue organization. Volunteer at your local shelter and offer to walk a dog or play with a dog, clean cages or anything else they need help with.
  2. Have a safety check of your home to make sure it’s safe for your dog and others.Make sure the dogs cannot get out of your fence in the yard.
  3. Donate blankets, food and toys to animal welfare organizations. In our area we have YAPS.
  4. Write your Congressman and ask that he/she support the ban of Puppy Mills and city shelters that are not no-kill shelters.
  5. Have a National Dog Day party and invite all your friends and their dogs!
  6. Spend the day taking photos of your dog.
  7. Assist an ill or elderly neighbor by walking their dog.
  8. Buy your dog a fun new dog toy or chewy sticks.
  9. Give your dog some fun exercise by taking him or her to a doggy day care.
  10. Brush your dog to eliminate excess fur.
  11. Give your dog a massage or holistic spa treatment.
  12. Teach your dog a new trick.
  13. Buy your dog a fashionable collar and leash.
  14. Give your dogs hugs and kisses every day not just on Dog Apprec. Day.

Here is my dog asleep at my desk. I don't usually get photos of her with her eyes shut.

Your fur babies are so cute.  My dog is "recycled".  I can't believe someone else didn't want him!  We're so lucky to have had him wait for us.

Kristin, good tips for keeping your pets happy and healthy. I think volunteering to walk an ill or elderly neighbor's dog is such a good idea.

Hi Chris,

I just don't understand why people grow up and get pets and mistreat them or just abandon them. Did their parents not teach them some responsibility or what is the problem. If you cannot take care of them, turn them over to someone who can like a dog shelter. I am so glad you rescued your fur baby. 2 of mine were 3-4 week rescue dogs. My daughters had been ignored and starved and left at a foreclosed bank home I had. She weighed 3 pounds and was starving to death. We thought she was a puppy but the vet said she was really 4 months old and should have weighed about 8-9 pounds. She is healthy and happy now and loves everyone. I just dont understand what goes wrong with people?

These are great tips, Kristin, especially the one about helping an elderly neighbor. Dogs need exercise and it will take the pressure of the owners if they are unable to do much

What a great list, Kristin.  Bless you!  We celebrate Felknapp's birthday on that day because he was a rescue dog, and we don't know when his "real" birthday is.  so, yes, he gets lots of things on your list.  I especially liked number 1 and taking an elderly person's dog for a jaunt.  Thanks for all the great suggestions!  LIKED!!!!

Kristin, Oh I missed the day! Love all your photos, especially the one with the little girl sleeping on your chair. I'm going to pretend Sunday is National Dog Day and do something special for a local shelter.  With my girl, every day is a "national dog day" -- she is so spoiled, especially now that it's just her (but that's going to change soon).
