Labor Day weekend is always the last hurrah of summer and there are always plenty of Labor Day activities in Louisville to enjoy. With weather forecasters predicting that another hard winter is ahead, it's a good time to get out and enjoy the best of Louisville.
For the record, it is the Farmer's Almanac making the dire predictions, but Live Weather Blogs has backed up the warnings by reporting that the Jet Stream and El Nino will lead to some extreme weather. In "Weatherspeak," this means that you will have some days are in early winter, followed by colder temperatures and more snow than usual, although not as much snow as last year. None of that is happening this weekend, so despite a little rain, you can give official summer a good sendoff.
Labor Day Activities In Louisville
This weekend offers a variety of interesting activities. Here are seven you might enjoy.
1. Mayor's Hike Bike and Paddle. Celebrate the holiday with your favorite sport and hike at Waterfront Park, bike through downtown, Portland, and West Louisville, or paddle through McAlpine locks. Opening at 8 AM on Labor Day for pre-event yoga, tai chi, and Zumba, the event is free, except for what you might spend with vendors located at spots throughout the venue. Hikers and bikers start at 10 AM, while the boaters get started about 10:30. Paddle boaters will make their way to the New Albany boat dock, where TARC shuttles will offer a free ride back to Waterfront Park where vehicles are located. 2. Four Roses Bourbon Kentucky Bluegrass & Bourbon Experience. Before Monday's tribute to outdoor exercise, you might want to enjoy BBQ, bourbon, and bluegrass music at the Water Tower on August 30th and 31st, the Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day. The event takes place at the Louisville Water Tower and only costs $10 before 6 PM and $14 after with free admission for kids under 10. If you enjoy bluegrass, check out the performance schedule.
3. Kentucky Kingdom. Nothing says the end of summer like a visit to an amusement park. Whether you enjoy the reopened Park earlier in the summer or you don't want to miss your chance to enjoy it this year, Kentucky Kingdom is open this weekend from 11 AM to 7 PM on Saturday and 6 PM on Sunday and Monday, as well as weekends in September. .4. Holiday World and Splashin' Safari. If you want to enjoy an amusement park plus BBQ in bluegrass in one place, the Red, White, and Bluegrass Festival is happening this weekend at Indiana's Holiday world. 5. Worldfest. Running Friday through Monday, this yearly festival offers good multicultural eating, crafts, and performances, following a naturalization ceremony on Friday. The event, now in its 12th year, raises awareness of the multicultural nature of Louisville, where over 90 languages are spoken in schools and where 50% of population growth over the last 15 years is from foreign countries. 6. Kentucky Flea Market. If your idea of the perfect long holiday weekend includes shopping and lots of it, the Flea Market at the KY Expo Center offers over 1200 booths and 400 antique/booths. Admission is free. Even if rains this weekend, there is enough to see at this flea market that you and your family will have a good time. Click here for information.
7. Cardinals football. If you're ready for some football there are several things going on this weekend. First, you can celebrate football by heading to fourth Street live! On August 31st for the Cardinal Kickoff live music with Kirbies Dreamland and appearances by the Ladybirds, UofL Cheerleaders and former UofL football players in a fun atmosphere for dining, drinking, and shopping.
