Like to watch planes, trains and automobiles? Hikers, bikers and boaters, too! Visit Gravelly Point Park in Arlington, Virginia.
Gravelly Point Park, in Arlington, Virginia, is located just north of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. It can only be accessed by automobile by heading northbound from the airport on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, but the Mount Vernon Trail runs alongside the park so it is easily accessed by bikers, joggers and walkers.
Its unique location just a few hundred feet from National’s runway makes it one of the best spots in the country for airplane watching. The park also has a great view across the Potomac River of Washington, DC and the Capitol Building, the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial are visible in the skyline. 14th Street Bridge spans crossing the Potomac River nearby carry the yellow line of the Metro and commuter and cargo trains.
The park, which is open from 4 am to 10 pm, has picnic tables, a large field for playing soccer or throwing a football, and a boat ramp. Kite flying is prohibited because of the low flying planes.
