Do We get Intimidated with a First Look?

Accept the Challenge or Back DownI was getting ready to play golf this morning at a course named The Preserve. The name alone set the tone for the course as it is a nature sanctuary with a championship curse running through it.  The practice range was set up with island greens for testing hitting distance and accuracy, and anything hit wrong went into the water.

As the course winds through a wildlife sanctuary, 16 of 18 holes have water that needs to be navigated to score well.

Our real estate business can be equally as intimidating and challenging at times:

  • The buyers that have high expectations but do not have the financial power to make the purchase. They will look for a home without getting qualified and then have to deal with the reality and disappointment of where their search needs to focus.
  • The buyers that attempt to use a home inspection as a point to renegotiate the purchase even though the home had been priced for conditions.

Accept the Challenge or Back Down

  • The sellers that expect a buyer to have the same appreciation for the home that they had and be willing to overlook deferred or no maintenance issues and still pay top dollar for the home.
  • The sellers that want to deliberately leave negotiating dollars on the listing in a tight buyer's market.

We face all manner of issues and are expected to use our skills and tact to navigate the challenges while still keeping our cool. We are always attempting to get our clients to the closing tables as quickly as possible but need to be wary of an obstacle unforeseen that challenges our knowledge and makes us use our skills to solve.

Every day is like playing a new course. We don't know what we will face and what we will have to do to overcome the lie we have. Years of practice and repetition allow us to accept those challenges and with the confidence to know we will meet our objective.

Accept the Challenge or Back Down

Ed- I think that for many it is the excitement of the new... the challenge of not knowing that brings us back day after day.

Ed, so true, initially we don't have easy transactions and as we get more experience, it becomes relatively easy - even when 16 of the 18 holes are difficult, it's just part of the game!

Good morning Ed. Your post is a well deserved feature. Your analogy make such great sense. For me, it would have to be watching golf, as the game was not one of my favorite pass times.

Make it a great week!

Excellent analogy, Ed.  I guess I'll have to learn how to play golf so I can improve my real estate business!

Sounds like a golf course I would have enjoyed a few years ago, and I can still appreciate! And this makes a wonderful analogy for what we do. You posts always make me smile, Ed

When my wife and I purchased our homes over the years, we moved with a purpose and always got the home of our choice. HOW? If you are going to buy a home....act, walk, talk, and perform like a buyer. One other thing....My wife would say before we went...Be ready to write a check if I like this home

If the law of attraction is a real law it would have to do with my golf game and water features. Water was a siren call to my clubs. This is also a good analogy for the real estate challenges we face.

There is simply no way to know what our score will be at the end of any given real estate day.  Some are better than others, and others we would like to forget.  That's the real estate life!

That looks like a stunning golf course. I don't play the game but the challenges in our business I guess are par for the course.

Ed, I'd much rather tackle the challenges of the real estate industry rather than the ones on the golf course - for me, there is no experience more humbling or frustrating than a bad day of golf.  And for me, every day is a bad day of golf.

Hi Ed - I probably would have run out of golf balls on that course!  This is a great analogy for the challenges in the real estate business.

Good Mornig Ed: I bet you are not intimated by the First Look and you did drive that club with confidence just like you do in your business no matter how big the challenge is.

This is so true: The buyers that attempt to use a home inspection as a point to renegotiate the purchase even though the home had been priced for conditions. I tell my sellers there will be two negotiations, one on day 0, another on day 17!

Beautiful and yet, looks like a challenging golf course. I always wished I was a golfer and now, too late to start. Nice analogy - the golf course experience and buyers.

I hope real estate isn't really like golf...I'm terrible at golf. But you are right about challenges, and that's what makes this such fun.
