California Plastic Bag Ban up for Signature

California Plastic Bag Ban up for Signature

You will no longer see plastic bags clogging our water ways and at ocean beaches in California which has cost millions of dollars to remove. California passed legislation last Friday in the Senate 22-15 to ban plastic bag use. Plastic bags at the check out line in grocery stores and large pharmacies starting in 2015 and at convenience stores starting in 2016 will be a thing of the past. Gerry Brown's signature is all that is needed for this to take affect.

What will we do without these bags and what will be used instead?

This legislation includes loans that allow bag manufacturers to switch over to the production of paper bags and allows for stores to charge 10 cents for paper and reusable bags. I was at a store yesterday and they were already charging for paper bags and did not offer any plastic. This has been banned in Los Angeles and San Fransisco already for some time now. The entire state is just catching up. Actually there are over 100 local jurisdictions in California where this ban is already imposed.

Will folding shopping cart be the norm of the future? Growing up in South America, this was the norm...

Yolanda,

Seems like plastic bag recycle program never got off the ground like plastic bottle program did. Too many end up in the drainage system and oceans so they had to do something.

Georgie,

This was the main concern in California, the bags in the ocean that cost so much to clean up every year. Glad this worked where you are at. Have a great day.

The plastic bag ban is already in place in Huntington Beach with a option to purchase paper, seems that most have adapted.

Hi Sarah, I hope this ban will result in les trash. I keep my reusable bags in the trunk, using them has become second nature.

Alexandra,

I agree. Give the oceans a break for sure. Way too much garbage is going into them. I am sure this will help.

Sarah, we shop often at SAM's Club and never use plastic bags. Works very well. We just load our groceries and purchases in empty boxes placed in our shopping carts or bring cloth bags from home. It is so important to be good caregivers of our planet.

Endre,

Government restrictions on single use plastic bags does seem like too much government for sure. I guess they saw a clean up expense that they could get off the books if they were to ban the stuff clogging our storm drains and oceans and then they could tax the paper bags being sold.... big government at it's best.

Jane, I saw some great cloth bags for sale at Raph's today for $1.... I'm going to have to buy a dozen or so of them soon to keep in my car. Not a real big inconvenience for what we get for it.

Sarah: Growing up in England we brought our own cloth bags to the store to take our groceries home in. Good to see this passed in CA.

I'm with you.. This has been a long time coming. I am going to have to buy a dozen or so cloth bags not in the too distant future.

Nick,

Makes sense dosn't it? Why did the government spend money cleaning up the mess when they can make money selling paper? Government's view as Ronald Reagan said:  If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Always nice to see a plastic bag replaced by a bag made from a renewable resource like paper.

Judi,

California has spent too much on clean up of these bags from the oceans and waterways. Time for change!

Bob,

Paper is on the way... I may end up buying a bunch of cloth bags I can use over and over if the paper is going to be 10 cents a bag.
