Neighborhood Description
Neartown Houston is located in west-central Houston. Allen Parkway to the north, U.S. Highway 59 to the south, Bagby Street on the east, and Shepherd Drive to the west. In 1911, Neartown was platted and as a whole is located within the Montrose Houston.
Neartown neighboring subdivisions are: Cherryhurst, Courtland Place, Hyde Park, Mandell Place, Montrose, Vermont Commons and Winlow Place.
Prior to the Neartown Houston’s 2000 U.S. Census, Newtown’s diverse community of artists, gay men and women and young adults has turned as three quarters of the residents are renters. Only one-quarter of Neartown are homeowners. Among the renters are students from the nearby three universities, Texas Medical Center students, downtown Houston professionals as well as professionals that work in the Greenway Plaza area.
A small portion of the neighborhood’s original second-hand shopping, thrift and vintage-shopping venue can be sparsely found. In its place, Newtown Houston continues its transformation of upscale retail boutiques, restaurants, high rent, remodeling of older homes and new built construction. Property values have increased as older buildings are being torn down to give way to condo construction.
