Neighborhood Description
Upper Kirby Houston is located inside Interstate 610 (610 Loop). Its borders are Montrose, Greenway Plaza and River Oaks neighborhoods. The Upper Kirby neighborhood can be found north of West University Place, west of S. Shepherd, just east of Greenway Plaza/Buffalo Speedway and southwest of Montrose and south of River Oaks.
Upper Kirby Houston is a mix of apartment living, townhomes, cottages, and duplexes. In its early stages, the Upper Kirby neighborhood wasn’t very well defined nor had a name until the later 1980’s. With a busy thoroughfare leading to other areas of Houston and commercial property deteriorating its surrounding affluent neighborhood was Upper Kirby’s saving grace.
Upper Kirby Houston was created in January of 1988. Both the neighborhood homeowners and business owners gathered in a joint effort to find common ground. Their first mission was to find answers to the how to, what to and where to go questions from its deteriorating state and move forward. From this quest, the Upper District was created and became known as Upper Kirby.
Over the years, the homeowners, business owners and supporting local institutions changed the area for the better. Their goals were clear and turned Upper Kirby Houston into a beautiful community with a distinct identity that would reach out to the community. They more than exceeded in the effect to breath new life into the once neglected area. Upper Kirby Houston is a success story how both caring homeowners and business owners could come together to create a vibrant community that enhanced the quality of life of the neighborhood. And story didn’t end there.
After 16 years and in January 2002, the Upper Kirby District Merchant’s Association reorganized to become the Houston In Town Chamber of Commerce. Quite a history as the Chamber not only serves the Upper Kirby area but also serves its surrounding neighbors in the Afton Oaks, Greenway Plaza, Midtown, the Museum District, Neartown, Rice University/Rice Village and River Oaks neighborhoods.
The Chamber serves each of these neighborhoods in supporting its commercial and residential interests for growing businesses without impacting the quality of life of its residents. The area is a non-zoned area due to residential living and its business residing side-by-side.
The highly desirable location of Upper Kirby Houston thrives as new restaurants continue to open along side some long-standing favorites. Its “main” street, Kirby Dr., has been widened to accommodate its most recent new luxury high-rise, West Ave at River Oaks.
The West Ave at River Oaks high-rise has six different restaurants to accommodate residents with local and international cuisines. Restaurants include an urban café of Indian-inspired cuisine, award-winning seafood and steak restaurant, and a unique dining experience as Korean and Japanese favors are fused to create on-of-a-kind dining experience. Also, it hosts a café that offers a variety of 300 different wines. West Ave. not only offers its residents a unique culinary experience but also services such as haircuts, a surgeon’s office for quickie little nip-and-tuck, specialty dental services, bridal dresses, fine clothing and shoes. West Ave has their residents literally covered from head to toe.
Today, in the real estate market, bungalows price range is in the high $300,000 while a townhome and new construction price range is $400,000. Upper Kirby is located in Harris County, schools are zoned to the Houston Independent School District and its zip code is 77098.
