News Articles and Market Reports - Duplicates and SEO No No's

Services for Real Estate Pros with Personal SEO - Website SEO and Real Estate Marketing

Do you post news articles on your blog from major news sources and site the source? Do you do it more than you write original content? How about market reports? Do you copy and paste the same template and then change just the community, town and prices?

Now, it's ok to once in a while repost some great content if you feel it helps your readers and as long as you link back to the source of the article but if you do that more than you write your own original content you are diluting your site.News Articles and Market Reports - Duplicates and SEO No No's

The more content you swipe from somewhere else the more your site looses it's originality and authority. If, in reading fabulous news articles  you think would be valuable on your website and simply copy and paste the content over, you're diluting the authority of your site as having any original content. If you're blogging on your own with your own original content once or twice a week or even once or twice a month but copying and pasting news articles from other websites and sources more than you're creating your own original content, the site will be unbalanced as an authoritative resource for what you're actually selling.

It's completely fine to link to articles that have related content and  Google actually encourages it if it helps the reader understand what you're trying to say in your original content. You are giving your reader as much information on whatever subject your writing on as possible. However, if you continually copy and paste entire articles  into your own blog post, even with a link back to the source, you are slowly lowering the authority of the website as a whole.

The same goes for market reports.

Market reports can be very dull but they also can be very informative if done correctly. However, if you are simply changing the community or tow and all the numbers but leaving the basic information the same in every single market report you do either weekly or monthly, Google will still count it as similar and duplicate content. Each market report needs to be unique and custom. I know it's a pain, especially if you do the same reports month after month, but throw in some new content about the area, local events that month or activities that you haven't previously mentioned. Also, add photos of the area each time and label them differently with a unique ALT tag.

"Duplicate content is any content on another website, right?

Wrong. Or at least it’s not that simple.

Duplicate Content is the same or very similar content on the SAME website." [Source]

So you don't want those market reports duplicated over and over again on your site.

Here's what you can do about news articles.

News Articles and Market Reports - Duplicates and SEO No No'sThere are many sites that have great content that you may want to share and most of the time it's fine as long as you put in a source link (but check with TOS of the site for full rules on sharing content). But, the better way so as to not dilute your blog is use bits of the information in your own blog about the subject. Put your own opinion and twist on the topic and use segments of the articles in quotes so readers know you are quoting the actual article, like the quote above from Search Engine Journal

I believe the best way to use great content on your site is to provide an excerpt and then link to the main article for the rest. Give your readers a good paragraph about the topic but then put a link in to read more from the source. This won't dilute the amount of content on your site (as long as you producing your own content as well) and yet you are giving your readers great information even if you didn't write it.

Syndicating is different than duplicate

“If you syndicate your content on other sites, Google will always show the version we think is most appropriate for users in each given search, which may or may not be the version you’d prefer.”

Syndicating your own content is fine as long as the original resides where you want it. Good content should be syndicated in the appropriate way. This can be for your own content and other people's. Maybe you have a great blog on your ActiveRain site and want to syndicate it to your tumblr account. Give readers a taste of what the article is about and then a link to read more over where the information originated.

The take away here is balance. Don't be so wrapped up copying and pasting great information that you forget that readers want to hear from you too! Give us your take on the topic, syndicate it on social media or give us just an paragraph or two of the article but don't just copy and paste for the sake of building your site or boosting another's content.

Market reports by themselves are boring! Why not post the instruction manual to your copier? I don't think you can engage an audience with a market report.

Blogging offer the opportunity to be creative and let some of your personality come out. Have fun with it and give readers something memorable to read and maybe think about too.

I agree Tammie! Market reports can show the stats, but having local photos and commentary is how to break up the "duplicate content" part of it. Not such a great read, but they come up all over the web and clients find them and sift through what they like... info about the area. Great way to shine in your own market.

Great tips, especially regarding market reports.  Oh how agents are hurting themselves by posting duplicate market reports for cities using county data and just changing the name of the town!

Thanks for the overview of what is a good/bad idea in terms of blogging and SEO. Market reports are dull, but they're also what buyers and sellers look for.

I always link back after writing a take away from articles.  I don't post articles that often.  I have one community that I do a monthly market report on, and I do copy the content from the prior month and do a few changes.

That community is the ONLY one that I do this on.  I'm now wondering....but since it's the same community, I don't see a problem.

Does this expand to localism posts and blogs about community events?  I confess I have somewhat of a template for these posts, and while the general content is different per blog post, they can appear pretty similar.

Maria, it can be challenging but may be spreading out the market reports to each quarter instead of monthly would help.

Joan, absolutely.

Evelyn, sheesh, that's a lot of market reports. And it can get dull but if you are getting rankings from them then you must be doing something right.

Tamir, oh my, I will have to check that one out.

Laura, absolutely.

Randy, that's exactly what I'm talking about. People want to know your opinion on whatever topic is of interest.

Kevin, thank you for commenting

PRaful, yes, new pictures, new events, or any news that's happening in that community such as road construction or new parks that are being developed are excellent material.

Maureen, thank you so much

Bob, events are a great way to get a lot of views even past events from previous years may still carry some weight in the search engines. And it's good to go back and update those for current events.

Pamela, like I told Praful, above, any news with a particular town or community such as road construction or new build businesses can provide new material.

John, great! Thank you

Jason, exactly. Or you can even do a market report with a video instead and optimize that video. You can talk about the area but the more personable talking about the sales and the market report in an attractive video.

Janis, people may still want to know about those market reports and if you make it interesting like I just told Jason above, make a video, it might be a lot more entertaining for the reader.

Nick and Trudy, thank you so much

Jenna, yes, this happens more often than not and Google will pass those market reports by.

Kat, you're right. They are what buyers and sellers sometimes research so making it the best market report possible does take some doing.

Shannon, yes they do. And it's those that really stand out with uniqueness that keeps the buyers and sellers coming back as well as Google.

Sybil, it absolutely is hard and things change all the time. As long as you provide adequate credit, don't plagiarize, and don't break any copyright laws you should be okay.

Richie, ha ha, I used to but now I love doing this much more.

Andrew, absolutely. Given that teaser and still keep them interested in what you are writing.

Adrian, thank you so much

Kate, it can be but too many of the exact same community market reports will get diluted and then Google might not rank any of them. As long as the title is different including the date and you have a little bit different information each time they might rank. But, if your ranking now, I wouldn't worry about it.

Kevin, they can appear very similar and this is where quality has to perform over quantity. If you're just trying to get out numerous blog posts without adding any quality, Google and your readers will soon find it. Maybe do about half of the event or market report information but yet make each one extremely important.

Has anything changed in the way of posting the same article in two different places at the same time.  I know one could have an intro paragraph with a link, but if you didn't want that, would you be penalized in some way?

Tammy - this all makes sense to me.  I write original and also put it on my Linked In updates.  As person who a social media person says you would be better if you were a curator.  I did even understand what he meant until I found out it was linking to others.   I thought is sounded dumb then and you have just confirmed.

 Tammy Emineth

Once again you have written another great blog. Now I try to include links to my market report like say a new home subdivisions or Condos just built or being built in that area as well as any community news that potential home buyers or sellers will find helpful. But I'm going to start including excerpts and then a link like you v suggested. Great stuff.
