Jurupa Community Services District (JCSD) May Increase Rates

Some of our clients have been requesting that we give them information as to what the water, sewer, electricity, etc will be in their new home where they are considering to move. Much of this depends on whether or not they use solar, how much they are home during the day, how big their yards are and what kind of landscaping they have. Since this is so subjective, it may help to zero in on specific issues....

On Monday, the JCSD is going to consider whether or not they should send out notices to set a public hearing regarding rate increases. Water and sewer rate increases could be the subject of a November 10 public hearing. Under a proposed plan, your water bill could increase 4 percent for 3 years and your sewer bill may have a fixed rate of $36.03. These rate increase will affect over 28,000 water and about 26,700 sewer customers.

Last year, Riverside approved a rate increase to cover expansion costs of the treatment facility that the JCSD uses. Riverside rates are only $28.55 but by 2019 their rates will be over $14.00 more than what they are now. There were disputes about how the sewer money was being used but JCSD asked that the disputes be settled out of court as litigation costs would have to be passed onto the customers.

This is on top of Southern California Edison rates that also are increasing about 8%.

The JCSD board meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. at 11201 Harrel St., Jurupa Valley

Hi Sarah -- with the pressure on local governments and services to control costs, something has to give especially with population growth and increased demand.

Michael,

You are right... the population increse and the increase on demand for services has caused the expansion of the facilites needed to treat sewer and the costs are being passed on to us. Hopefully there are not any litigation costs associated with these increases.

Sarah, definitely good information for consumers.  However, and this is just my opinion, but as consumers are squeezed, perhaps many not finding jobs and with many areas still struggling with housing issues...I don't think it's fair to heap more on the backs of the consumers.  Cut back or learn to do without!  I've watched my yearly taxes grow every year and don't see anything for it.  Even when filing a tax protest and proving what my home should be assessed at the city tax collector just doesn't care...he wants his dime.  I'll stop now before I really go over the edge.

Nick,

As long as they are using the increase for upgrading the sewer capacity and water capacity that is one thing. But when they are charging more for our districts than Riverside for the same services then I begin to wonder if the money is being used for litigation costs or for services. I may have to go to the board meeting!
