Charleston Single House?
Or A Double Decker
Hybrid Manufactured Home?
I know, call me crazy what with all the absolutely beautiful architecture that abounds in beautiful downtown Charleston but this one caught my attention.
While on our daily 6 mile walkathon as we take in all the rich history and eclectic but beautiful and rich architectural beauty we couldn't help but stalk in awe all the SINGLE HOUSES that salt and pepper the downtown landscape.
The Charleston Single House as it is called is a style found predominantly throughout the downtown and surrounding areas. They are perfect for the long narrow lots that were carved out of the early Charleston days.
The earliest Single Houses were built in a variety of architectural designs i.e. Federal, Victorian and even Greek Revival but still maintained the basic look as seen in the photo above.
Later, however, Single Houses, took on another personality as they added two and even three story porches with a very characteristic private entry that resembled the front door of the home.
These porches, decks or balconies, as we call them on the West Coast, are referred to as Piazzas by the locals.
However, what really got our attention was the amazing resemblence they had to the hybrid two-story part Manufactured Home on the bottom floor and a site (stick) built second story, or CABANA, as they are referred to in the Manufactured Housing Industry.
The unusual height of what are referred to in this tiny little Coastal Mobile and Manufactured Home Community as "THE HIGH RISES" have accidentally mimicked the shape of the Charleston "SINGLE HOUSES" by default.
The reason? In order to comply with the California of Housing & Community Development's (HCD) requirements the roof of the Manufactured Home cannot be removed making it necessary to elevate the 2nd story framing up over the entire roof. Add to that the fact that the Manufactured Home is installed approximately 18 inches above ground and you have definitely mimicked the aesthetic of the Charleston Single House.
Ideally if we really wanted to emulate this very unique architectural style we could build out a full length 2nd story deck over a two car tandem carport which would further enhance the concept of utilizing the CUBIC FOOT vs the SQUARE FOOT.
