Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust. The 10th Annual Historic House Tour

Features R. Brognard Okie Homes for Anniversary Celebration

Hosted by the Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, the much-anticipated 10th Annual Historic House Tour will take guests behind the scenes of historic and breathtaking properties in Tredyffrin and Easttown Townships on Saturday, September 27, 12 - 5 PM. Held annually since 2004, the purpose of the historic house tour is to foster appreciation of historic buildings and neighborhoods and the need for their preservation. The tour showcases history and architectural splendors, and shares elegant examples of beauty, warmth and historic preservation.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the tour, the 2014 tour will feature majestically diverse historic homes by acclaimed Chester County architect R. Brognard Okie (1875-1945) including his personal 18th century residence, ‘Hillside Farm’ in Berwyn. In addition to private residences, the tour will also include the Great Valley Mill and St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, where visitors will enjoy Okie’s wonderful interior design work. Okie was noted for his Colonial-Revival houses and his sensitive restorations of historic buildings. The Historic House Tour offers the public a rare opportunity to tour beautiful private residences featuring outstanding historic preservation, restoration, and interior design and landscaping styles.

Tour visitors have the chance to discover the rich, architectural heritage of the area as they explore private residences some with outbuildings including stables and a springhouse, and tour a historic church, a mill and much more! The featured properties span 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and visitors are invited inside for a glimpse of what it is like to live, work, and worship in these unique historic structures. Each property has generations of original stories to tell.

“We are excited about the tour’s tenth anniversary celebration,” commented Pattye Benson, Trust President and Chair of the annual house tour. “I am grateful to the historic homeowners who by sharing their extraordinary homes allow us to better understand the significant and unique history of our community. The featured properties are prime examples of Okie’s architectural legacy as well as the character of individual neighborhoods. With the cooperation of generous homeowners, many volunteers and supportive individual and corporate sponsors, you can experience the buildings that make this area distinctive and beautiful.”

The self-guided tour allows individuals to witness three centuries of architecture and is the primary fundraiser for Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, a registered 501c3 organization dedicated to preserving and protecting historic and cultural resources and educating the public about the preservation and protection of historic and cultural settings. All proceeds from the tour will benefit the Jones Log Barn rebuilding project in Chesterbrook. When completed, the Jones Log Barn will join two National Historic Register buildings – Duportail House and the Federal Barn – and will serve as the ‘Living History Center at Duportail’.

Discover the beauty of historic preservation by visiting the treasured properties of the 10th Annual Historic House Tour. The historic properties and gardens will be open from 12 Noon to 5 PM on Saturday, September 27, rain or shine. Duportail House (297 Adams Drive, Chesterbrook) will be the featured ticket pick-up point for the 10th Annual Historic House Tour. Knowledgeable guides staff each home on the tour and house tour admission includes individual house history booklets with map and parking details.

The House Tour Preview Party celebrates the homeowners and the homes featured on the tour and serves to thank the generous individual and corporate sponsors who make the tour possible. To celebrate a decade of house tour, the public is invited to attend the Preview Party, an evening of hors d’oeuvres, drinks, live music by ‘The Burgandy’s’ and lots of fun on Sunday, September 21, 5-8 PM at Duportail House in Chesterbrook. Attendees will get a sneak preview of the beautiful homes featured on the 10th Annual Historic House Tour.
