My Alyssa Harris Bee Cave Elementary Reading Challenge Austin TXdaughter, Alyssa, is in 1st grade this year and is 6 1/2 years old. Over the Summer, the Bee Cave Elementary school librarian put out a challenge for all the students to read. The challenge was for everyone in Kinder, 1st, and 2nd grades to read 1000 pages. Everyone in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades were to read at least 1500 pages...

My little over-achiever smoked them all!! She was given a medal for reading the most pages out of everyone in the entire school!! She read 11,041 pages (and that's not counting the 20 pages she read after I calculated everything).  She read more than 1000 pages more than the 2nd place person.

I love that she loves to read and I hope it continues. She can't wait for the next reading challenge!!

Donna, here's a tip from a mom who has two kids in college: reading lots creates great writers. Both my kids read for enjoyment, even now, when they have hectic class schedules and lots of homework. Both kids have become excellent writers and college professors have even suggested they could be published one day. Tell Alyssa to keep up the good work it has lots of benefits.

Hi Tammie, I'll definitely let her know! She went through a phase of hating to read last year, and when I didn't push it, she decided she loved it even more.

Hi Donna, I can tell that she off to a great start at such an early age. Her reading skills will certainly take her a long way in the near future. It's especially very beneficial for all those college entrance exams. Reading has always been a major part on those tests. Keep encouraging her as I know you will.
