Mike Pollok President/CEO

How long have you been in business? I have been looking for oil and gas since 1987.

Tell us a little about your business and the services you offer? I have been an exploration geologist since I graduated OU. I generate ideas on where oil and gas may be trapped and productive. I became an independent in 1995 and opened my office in downtown Purcell. I have become an expert in a certain geologic region and know the ins and outs of the entire process of getting a well drilled and completed. This includes checking records at the courthouse, making leasing decisions, packaging prospects, selling, well-site geology, overseeing completion of the well, and marketing the product. I have a fun time looking for the "prize".

Why did you start your business? What attracted you to your industry? I became a geologist after I realized becoming a forest ranger was going to be political when hiring time came. I switched to geology because you worked outside at times. My first job as a real geologist paid $5/hr, but I learned from a crusty old-timer, who whetted my appetite for the hunt of discovering oil and gas... and the rewards of "mailbox" money.

What makes your business stand out? My business stands out because I have stayed below the radar screen and done my own thing. Nobody truly knows what I do.

What is the biggest success you company has had? My biggest success has been having fun, or enjoying what I do. I realized, you never know when it will happen, but eventually, if you stay with and are persistent, you will be successful as long as you have a good business plan.

What is your favorite part of running your business? My favorite part of running a business is being able to do something every day. I don't do the same thing day in, day out. There are too many things to do.

What are the biggest challenges you face - as a small business owner or company? The biggest challenges I face; being small, you cannot compete with bigger companies, but you can be faster making decisions.

Do you have any special education, background or skills? What unique talents do you bring to your business? My special education is the school of hard knocks, it took me eight years to get a BS in Geology. Sometimes I wonder how I got here. The oil business is not a get rich quick business. My unique talent is very easy to learn, do things nobody else wants to do, no matter how trivial it seems at the time.

What do you love most about our community? Purcell is a unique community. There are many second, third and fourth generation families. These are interspersed with many new families like mine that have come for the small town quaintness, with a semi-laidback atmosphere.

What are the future plans for your business? My future plans for my business, is status quo. I will stay busy, just not as much working as enjoying.

What is the best advice that you received and who did it come from? The best advice I received was from my old curmudgeon boss. "I don't want to work a lot for a little bit, I want to work a little for a lot."

One Last Thing: any interesting information you would like others to know? I am a second generation immigrant.

Than-I like that term "mail box money". I can relate to that since some commissions are paid at Closing and others come in the mail box after the sale,
