Say Goodbye to the Old Me

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Dawn Brenengen - Trailwood Realty 202789

I started my own real estate brokerage in 2010.  At the time, I was in a relationship and considering marriage.  I knew I one day wanted a family, and the onsite hours with the home builders I was currently working for were going to get in the way of my goals.  I wanted to be able to spend time with my kids, not put them in daycare, and take them to activities.  I don't mind working a lot, I just didn't want to be tied to a set schedule and forced to be in an office.  So, I started my own company doing sales and property management.  In the beginning, money was tight.  Thank God my future husband had a decent paying W2-type J.O.B.  Without his support, I don't know that I would have ever taken the leap to work for myself.  To save money, I did as much work as I could myself.  I didn't outsource anything.  I learned Photoshop and made my own advertising pieces.  I learned Wordpress and made my own website.  I was so proud of the website in 2010.  I did it myself, and I was in love with it.

Fast forward four years.  I hired two agents, and the newest one asked me the other day, "what are your plans for your website?"  Huh?  What's wrong with my website?  Well, I go back and look at it, and it looks OLD.  It looks like a throwback to free AOL CDs with hours of dial up.  I might as well be faxing people my listings.

I took the plunge today.  I hired a local Wordpress developer.  We, ahem....I mean "he" is going to build a new site, and I couldn't be more excited.  I'm going to stay out of it this time.  I'm going to let go on control and some cash and build something my agents can be proud to send people to.  It's about time to get into 2014!

PS - It's a good thing I stopped working onsite.  I got married the same year, and then I found out I was having twins the following year.  Can you imagine paying for daycare for two infants at one time?  Me neither...thank God for family who lives nearby.  They watch my kids while I work, and I am so thankful for them.

Good luck with the website, sure it will look good. Congrats on the family, enjoy them whilst you can time flies and before you know they will be leaving for college.

I think you are very wise to invest in a website that is current and one in which your other agents can be proud of! I admire all you have done and am glad you are now in a position to build bigger and better things!

On a personal note, I have 7 year old twins as well. I could NOT work when they were little and only went back to work when they were 2 1/2. Even then we were just breaking even on daycare!

Dawn- isn't amazing how quickly life as well as technology can change! Congrats on taking the plunge with hiring someone to create a new wordpress website for you. I can't help but wonder if your twins will grow up to with the passion for real estate you have. I work with my identical twin everyday ...it's awesome! Good Luck... I want to see your website when it's done!

Best of luck with the new endeavors.  I delegate tasks that other people would be better to handling it anytime I know it's going to take me twice as long to do it myself.

While you're at it, why not hire a hotshot commercial photographer to follow you around town and shoot photos for your website? It may cost a few thousand, but it's oh-so-worth-it. Remember, every picture tells a story, don't it?

I also believe that today's outstanding websites for the most part are professionally designed. Just remember that you also also need top-notch SEO elements reflected in the design. No sense having an interesting and attractive website that no one knows is there.

Jordon Wheeler Congrats on opening your own brokerage.  It's a challenge, but if you do it right, it's also very rewarding!

Shannon Milligan, Richmond VA Real Estate Agent Twins are so much more common than I thought. :) Mine are 2.5 now, and I have a hard time getting anything done when they are around. Thankfully, my mom and inlaws are all retired and help out a ton. It's not very professional to answer the phone with two screaming toddlers in the background!

Peggy James That's so awesome that you are that close.  I'm trying to figure out what the secret sauce is for turning them into BFFs and not mortal enemies!

Nick & Trudy Vandekar On their second birthday, I was already lamenting how they are 1/9 on the way to college.  Scary!

Kevin Mackessy It's important to know where your strengths and efficiencies lie. Why spend three times are much time doing a task as someone else you can simply pay?

Sybil Campbell Thank you, and I know how lucky I am, especially as I see my BFF paying to put her two in daycare.  It's probably at least half of her salary.

Kathleen Daniels It sounds like there is an interesting story behind that comment :)

Grant Schneider It sounds like you're a lot more proactive than I am!

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents That is a FANTASTIC idea, and I just might do that.  Thanks!

James (Jim) Lawson, DBA I couldn't agree more! Having a blog element to it will be crucial for that regularly updated content!
