San Francisco's Friends of the Urban Forest -

providing benefits and beauty to our city ----

trees along Jackson Street

Have you ever strolled down a city street and thought, "this is a lovely"? If so, chances are is is because of street trees. And if you are in San Francisco, chances are you owe the Friends of the Urban Forest a big "thank you." These trees increase oxygen, clean the air, add beauty, calm the nerves, and often increase property values.

Street trees in Spring

Since 1981, the non-profit Friends of the Urban Forest has planted over 43,000 street trees in the various neighborhoods of the city. Their mission statement reads, "...to promote a larger, healthier urban forest as part of San Francisco's green infrastructure through community planting, tree care, education, and advocacy."

There are many ways in which you can get involved:

  • Make a donation to this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
  • Volunteer your time and talents. You can help plant trees, assist in the office and with out-reach programs, monitor trees that need attention, talk to property owner about adding a street tree - possibilities abound

Great post Lottie, I may be a little biased but I agree, a great urban forest can make for a great city, and a city without many trees is generally a little bleak and lifeless.

Good morning Lottie. The city has done an amazing job adding the thousands of trees that look so great along the streets.

Make it a great weekend!

Bob Crane - I'm glad you agree, and no, it's not a surprise!

Joe Petrowsky - those trees really do add beauty to our streets; I'm glad you noticed that. Enjoy your weekend, too.

How cool is that. I had no idea. I will be on the lookout - we are heading into SF in just a few minutes (here for a short faily visit - off to an art opening to see a friend, then drinks and dinner. Streets without trees look so barren.

Those photos are wonderful - who would know you were in the city!?

San Francisco is a good example of a modern city's Urban forest.

Good luck and success.

Wishing you a great time in SF Jeff Dowler CRS - and look for the trees planted by Friends of the Urban Forest!

Roy Kelley - I, for one, am glad they are here. This evening I was walking up Hyde Street on Russian Hill, and again realized one reason I walk on this street so often is because of the street trees (well, the cable cars aren't bad, either!)

Lou Ludwig - we have a lot of street trees, with more being planted every month. Lucky us.

Like Bob, I may be a little biased in that those trees provide great cover and nesting habitats for the birds I love.  Great photos, and I am signing up for the newsletter if it is electronic!  Thanks, Lottie Kendall, for providing us with this great information!
