Why most motivational speakers don’t have any effect on me.

Why most motivational speakers don’t have any effect on me by Richard WeisserWhen I hear the phrase “great motivational speaker” I usually cringe. I’m not really the kind of audience a motivational speaker wants within earshot of their pitch.

Why?

First of all, I am NOT motivated by money. I find the pursuit of money to be vulgar and coarse. I also truly believe that in many cases, money corrupts. I might go so far as to say in MOST cases money leads to spiritual depravity.

Secondly, I was impressed at a young age by an old adage that states: “Those that can, DO. Those that can’t, TEACH.” That tenet is burned deep into my psyche and no amount of therapy can change it.

But it seems that for some reason real estate agents are easy marks. And I think that has to do with the job itself. We all have disappointments along the way and we always want to be better at what we do.

If you want to help me be a better person, I might offer an ear. If you wave your way too expensive crap in front of me you have already lost me.

I don’t need to know how to trick or deceive a prospect. I don’t care if someone else makes more money than me. If that floats their boats, more power to them.

But it doesn’t amount to a hill of beans to me!

Depending on experience as a self disciplined self employed individual. I do recommend for new agents to go to some company motivation which concentrates on the mechanics and not driven by the profit by showing fancy sports cars, luxury homes etc by those who might have exceeded. I have been involved in MLM and traveled to be at conventions and seminars and I found many motivating but sickening at the same time. Being self employed you know what you need to do to put food on the table, and concentrating on the commissions will easily derail your real responsibility. Most motivation seminars are there for one reason and that is for the motivator to earn a living, I always thought, if their business ideals are making them a good living why would they be selling themselves as motivators when in reality they couldn't be successful with their own job. Motivators that tell you, you can march into a town pick up homes with no down payment and do all the repairs and sell for an exuberant profit are mis informing the masses and taking their hard earned cash for a dream that very few can succeed at, and those didn't start off with no money in their pockets. Too bad there isn't censorship on the main stream media but the corporations are only interested in generating a fat profit regardless how immoral.

Richard, it's boy, howdy from me as regards the 'motivational speaker' and their tables full of essentially worthless books and DVD's. The old adage is correct about those that can't do, teach.

Hi Richard - I hold many of the same thoughts that you do which is why I don't typically attend motivational speeches; I prefer workshops but even then hold the same addage in my head about DOERS and TEACHERS.  Most motivational speakers have spent their time learning how to be great motivational, not how to be great agents or LOs or anything else.  How can I teach you Russian if I don't speak the language?

One of the things I realized about motivational classes/seminars is that they pump you up for a day or so, but if you're not changing the way you're working, they don't have any long term benefits.  The biggest motivator for me is finding something that works for me - once I see success, I get motivated!

Richard,

I always remember that the main purpose of any of these motivational seminars I attend...is to extract money from my pocket, and put it into theirs. What they don't know is that I always leave my wallet in the car.

I couldn't agree with you more here Richard.  I've never been a follower, and some hack up on stage telling me about real estate "tricks" to sell more and get more listings is nothing more than a blowhard in my eyes.  If you're that great, why are you on stage selling a product?  Call it the skeptic in me, but I'm just not buying it.

My motivation comes in the form of a mortgage payment each month. Seriously, If I needed someone to "motivate" me, why would I be an independent contractor?

Education on the other hand is key. I am a voracious reader, and do pay for a coach. Of course if he spent ANY of our time talking about my motivation, there would be a stop payment on the check!

Richard, we all have some type of avenue where we find our inspiration and motivation to live and work everyday...

without it, there would not be a reason to get out from bed..

Some people are motivated by their kids, some by  the bible and even by just listening to  Jim Rohn..they are not instilling you to just make more money..they are showing you a direct pathway on being the best that you can possibly be...

I agree that some bad apples have chosen Realtors as an easy prey...(that is another whole blog) but motivational speakers have a role on my life....and they will always be.

I have spent (miss-spent?) thousands of dollars over the years on motivational speakers.  If I had consistently done what they recommended I'm sure many of their suggestions would have been useful.  However, in the long run, I was already motivated, and I realize that I know what I need to do without their help.

Richard Weisser I concur. I too am not and probably never will be affected by motivational speakers.... If you don't have that drive in you already then I personally cant understand how someone telling you to get that drive is going to help.. but hey that's just me....

Oh Richard...you and I are a lot of like. Motivational stuff does not work on me. If I want to do something, I'm doing it solely because I want to, not because somebody pushed/motivated me too. My happiness doesn't lie in millions of dollars, only I know what makes me happy.

Those sorts of speakers really prey upon a certain type of person, who most likely wants to get rich quick.  So much so that what the speaker is saying seems to be 100% fact.

Couldn't agree with you more on the message found in this article.  I, too, have never been motivated by money.  The challenge of putting a deal together, of assisting my clients, providing proper representation (in no particular order) motivates me.  How do you feel about Suze Or Man?  I call her Suze Oh Brother!

Richard, It's was that type of approach that eventually caused us to drop attending our real estate conventions.  Too many sessions were just a preface for selling us something in the back of the room, and in general, things we could do on our own at a lot less cost.

Money is not a primary motivator for me either, Richard. Helping people and keeping the transaction on track is much more important.

“Those that can, DO. Those that can’t, TEACH.”  Thank you for bringing up this old adage again Richard. Motivation is now a business too and some needs some push to move forward. This works for some, but the best motivator is yourself. You don't have to look for someone else and it's free.

Hi Richard, I agree with that addage. Gotta love it when they not only wave their expensive crap, but stand on stage so pumped up, I feel like I need meds to calm me down. I can motivate myself and do well.
