Oil Execs to defend Big Profit!

WASHINGTON - Executives from the big five oil companies will appear before Congress today to answer questions about how they're raking in big profits while consumers are being hammered at the pump.

Irving-based Exxon Mobil and Houston-based Shell, BP America and Conoco-Phillips joined California-based Chevron in earning a combined $123 billion last year because of rising prices.

The House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming wants to know why, with such big profits, the oil industry is trying to hold on to 18 billion dollars in tax breaks.

The oil companies have argued that they need the tax breaks for continued investment in exploration, production and refinery expansion. Lawmakers say the profits they're making should be enough incentive.

The House has approved legislation to end the tax breaks but it hasn't made it through the Senate. President Bush has threatened to veto any such bill that does.

They can't let go of the tax breaks if they do how will they offer their CEO these HUGE retirement packages?

I was discussing this on my blog the other day...over $22 Billion in NET profit combined for those five companies compared with just 7 years ago they had a combined net profit of $1.59 billion.  How do you account for a profit of over 13 times just seven years ago without mentioning the word GOUGE in there somewhere.

I'm all for free enterprise, but only when it truly is free.  Doesn't one have to ask "why are these 5 companies going to congress TOGETHER to defend their profits?  Doesn't that have at least a little smell of collusion?

I agree with Ron in that I am all for free enterprise, but when you keep hearing about record profits on top of tax breaks and incentives it does make ones blood boil.

I recently upgraded my car to a Toyota Camry Hybrid and am learining all over how to drive in the most effective manner possible. The old car was at 22 combined, the new nearly 35 combined...The sad thing is that at this time there is no tax incentive for this purchase...

No matter what they come uo with, there will never be a good explanation for the higher costs that will make sense...

You have to take into consideration that Bush is a big player in the oil industry. He is part owner in a oil company so it is to his advantage to veto the tax break that congress is trying to pass.
