Late yesterday afternoon, my husband’s Father, Joseph A. Gottwald, passed away in Florida. Pop had been in a nursing home for the past eight years, and had been a prisoner of Alzheimer’s.

My husband (Joe) lost his Mother, Hilda Marie, to cancer 4 ½ years ago. Mom was diagnosed in February 2010 and passed away three weeks later. She had been watching her husband of 64 years lose control of his physical and mental function, and it was heartbreaking, he no longer recognized her. She did not want to fight the cancer as she had already lost the love of her life, her husband, to the slow death of Alzheimer’s, and that was much harder to deal with than cancer itself.
Now, Mom and Pop will be reunited and can spend their "diamond years" together in both mind and spirit.
I know we all look forward to the day researchers find the cause of, and a cure for, Alzheimer’s.
