This weekend is the 26th annual Hummer Festival held in Rockport, TX. Everyone loves these cute little birds that come in a variety of colors. They can keep you entertained for hours watching them fight over the hummingbird feeder or gracefully flying from one flower to the next.
I spend hours on my back porch watching them. They are quite territorial and a lot of fun to watch.
The Coastal Bend area of Texas is a great place to bird watch. More than 80% of migratory bird species come to this area every year. One of my favorite are the white pelicans. They come in the winter and leave again in the Spring. You can find them sitting on the fishing piers all throughout the area. They are quite different from the brown pelicans we see all year long especially in the way they fish. Brown pelicans will dive from an aerial viewpoint but white pelicans are more like ducks, bobbing in the water and then ducking down to catch their prey.
This time of year though it is the hummingbirds that have all the attention. The festival will go on all weekend and lots of area businesses sponsor and support it. Homeowners will offer their backyard havens to the public for special views of hummers. The middle school in Rockport is the headquarters for the festival and will have lots of vendors, educational speakers, displays and videos to share with the public. Do go by and see all that is offered. It is a festival worth going to and you do not want to miss it.
Stop by HEB grocery stores for more information or go to the Rockport Fulton Chamber of Commerce page. You can order tickets online too. This is a community involved festival. Volunteers are always needed.
Your children will love this event.
