Setting a Goal - Be specific

I Have, Have Not,  Never Had

What truly separates the have's from the have not's? If you guessed money, in theory, you are correct but the true answer goes well beyond money. There is a much deeper answer which I am looking for. What truly separates the have's from the have not's, you give up? It is goals. According to Advisor Today, less than 3% of the population actually set goals, which is an interesting correlation to the fact that high wage earners (the top 3%) realize a large level of success compared to the average wage earner. These top have's learned early in life the value of goal setting.

The top 3% both practice the ritual of regular goal setting, which is rarely if ever practiced by 97% of the population. The top 3% also regularly review and update their goals. These same top 3% share other common characteristics; when they decide they want something, they spend time calculating how they can get it.
The top 3% are extremely focused. They surround themselves with positive influences. They know that things change quickly and they know that they must be ready for sudden changes. While 97% of the population live in a reactive world, the top 3% set goals and live a pro-active life.

So, if goals are the key to success why don't more people do it? It may be that no one ever taught them how to set goals. OK, I can hear some people screaming that they regularly set goals but they are still battling success. It could be that those screaming are actually part of the 97% because what they did was take notes and not actual goal setting. Goal setting is more than just writing a few words on a sheet of paper and looking at it once every few years. Goal setting is not difficult and it can easily be learned. Once you learn how to properly set goals, you have no reason to not set goals.

So let's take a look at a very simple goal setting format.

Step 1: Name the Goal                Buy a Ferrari

Step 2: Clarify the Goal          Buy a 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena

Step 3: Define the Goal          Buy the used 2002 Ferrari 360 Modena for $100,000 from Y Auto on                                                                                          September 1, 2014

Step 4: How to the Goal         Take $10,000 from savings, Take $30,000 from retirement, Use $10,000 from tax refund
Trade in Corvette worth $20,000, Finance $30,000

Step 5: Implement                 Go to Y Auto with your Corvette and the $50,000 in cash

So now that you have the basic knowledge of how to properly set a goal, the next step is to ACT. Locate your local professional life coach or even better call Williamson County Prosperity Shield and mention Diane O to receive a 10% discount on our life coaching services.

Interesting.  I just had this conversation with the Kelly, the Handyman that keeps my landscaping from going from plantings to jungle.

He mentioned the goals set by his regular employer and the difficulty all of the landscapers are having.

I shared that I don't like setting goals and don't set goals.  Seems to me that folks work with pride and achievement or they do not.

It's easy to see the difference.

When unrealistic goals are set, as they often are, nothing productive follows but disappointment.

Very well written Diane. I have tried many time in the past to write down my goals some are met and others keep popping up on my list. I will try again using your approach and see if I can achieve my goals.
