Over the past couple of weeks we have seen domestic violence making big headlines because of the Ray Rice incident; the only good thing that has come out of this is bring domestic violence to the forefront. Domestic violence is a serious issue affecting 1 out of 4 women in their lifetime; that is a staggering statistic. Since I have been in my 20’s the first charity I donated was the Ft. Bend Women’s Shelter; helping victims of domestic abuse. I do not know why but that always been my soft spot. I think because I have been extremely lucky in my life and always been surrounded by a loving family. I realized that getting an education was very important; I remember my dad telling me that I needed to be able to support myself and my family so I would not have to put up with any man who did not treat me or my family well and I could walk away. This is the exact reason for the purple purse challenge; many victims of domestic abuse are also victims of financial abuse.
The Purple Purse Challenge is part of the Allstate Foundation; it is trying to assist empowering women in domestic violence situations to be financially independent and able to get away from their abuser. Many victims stay because they do not have the financial means to support themselves and their families. So, please go to http://purplepurse.com/ and give a donation and help women get financially independent from their abusers. Also, go to site and learn how to help victims of abuse or to help yourself if you are a victim.
