A BBQ Challenge that gets no Publicity but draws Hundreds to taste the food
Peterson Field in Wolcott CT had an aroma coming out that drew the attention of a lot of neighbors. By 7 AM, the activity field had at least a half dozen tents erected and the cookers and smokers were being fired up for the day's cooking.
It's an event that started with a friendly neighborhood challenge as to who was the best at ribs. A date was set for mid September for the cook off and friends were invited to be the judges. That was 8 years ago and it was determined a draw.
As friends gathered to taste that first day's offerings, requests were made to attend the challenge the following year and compete as well. That snowball started to roll and this year there were 17 teams in competition with hundreds of spectators roaming the fields tasting the appetizers being offered.
The date is set, the word goes out to the previous year's participants, the park permits are obtained and all prepare. Now the entrants for the taste competition pay an entrance fee and cash awards are offerd for best ribs, best chicken, best 'other' as well as best display. There are 3 cash prizes per category and there are official judges that do all of the tasting.
While the cooking is being done, one can walk the booths and taste samplings of ribs, brisket, various dips, chili, some of which needs a written release of liability before it can be sampled. There are also steak sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, home made sausage as well as some chips and dips for those that don't eat meat.
All were having a great time, and the food was all so special with the secret rubs and spices being applied in an attempt to win that special first prize.
It was a special day, totally impromptu with several hundred attendees all enjoying the day and the food. I hope I can catch the date next year, as I will make sure not to eat before I get there
