Last Monday at this time I was recovering from early morning eye surgery. The result seems a lot like a miracle. Before the surgery, my left eye vision was a perfect 20-20, while my right eye vision was nothing but a blur.
It effected some very important aspects of my life, not the least of which was driving. My right eye was so bad I was unable to merge into a right lane of traffic. I drove out of my way to avoid it. My depth perception was seriously effected. Since my left eye was good I could get by with reading glasses for my work, but if I covered my left eye, faces were nothing but a blur.
I had what is called Lens Replacement Cataract Surgery. My natural lens (it focuses light for the brain to interpret) had changed from clear to dark and was replaced by an acrylic lens. The ophthalmologist, had, in a previous visit measured my eyeball so a proper size lens could be installed. The lens is called an IOL or an Intronocular Lens.
The lens I had chosen due to out of pocket cost ($4200, vs $8000) was a mono-focal lens. It was set for distance, meaning I would still need reading glasses. The other option was a multifocal lens which would have eliminated the need for reading glasses. The results seem like a miracle. I can merge to the right no problem, I can once again drive at night. I was even able to open a combo key box without any glasses.
I feel I was on the receiving end of a miracle. The surgery was painless and I have no memory of it. Some irritation was present for a few days but is largely gone now. I will use eye drops for 3 weeks, wear some rather dorky looking sun glasses for two weeks, but most important I can now tell my clients "I am very happy to see you", pun intended.
If you are considering eye surgery it has my hearty endorsement.
