Fall Gardening in the Northern States

Ron, of Ron’s Rustic Birdhouses is back to give Northern gardeners some great tips for fall!

We never like fall gardening as much as spring gardening because it doesn’t seem to hold as much promise as the spring does.

However, fall gardening is just as important.  Putting the plants and other gardening accoutrement can mean a very successful spring next year!

Doing a Little Houskeeping Outside

A little clean up now can prevent a lot of weed and disease problems in the future.

Do a little recon on your garden now and remove all the weeds, seed heads from those weeds, like burs, and diseased plant materials.  Do not compost any of this.  If you need to remove it from your property entirely, check with the local authorities to see what you can do with it.  Some compost site will accept it, if they know what it is and it is separated from leaves, etc.

Clean up leaves from your yard on a weekly basis so that it doesn’t become a huge chore.  And, rake those into bags if you don’t compost them all.  If you do this one simple tip, your lawn should look a lot better in the spring.

More tips tomorrow.

Best, Ron

Ron,

Those are great fall gardening tips, but you are correct if you pick up the leaves once a week it will not be unsurmountable! Happy Fall!

Keeping the lawn raked is now a chore I have handed off to the boy.  I have a mulching mower, too, but I don't like to leave the big oak leaves on the lawn....and when he is done, we throw the football around a little, too!

Ron, my husband and I removed the flowers from our garde, cleaned and raked, removed leaves and plant pansies for fall color. Also, added mums.

My garden got a fresh face for fall.  Somehow, I missed spring.  Now my mulch beds are fresh and shrubs trimmed up.

Our yard is looking very good with tons of recent rain and now I think it is time for it's winter fertilizer.

I hate raking more than any other yard work.  So we got me an electric blower ... which is a lot easier for me.

Hi Ron,

we were out of town for a few days and driving home right now? I am relying to comment using an Ipad which is always Aton of trouble for me. Thanks for commenting on my posts. I will catch up as this week moves along.

Thanks for the garden tips.

Hi Ron, Great Fall Gardening series. I don't mind raking a few leaves but my husband gets most with the bagger on the mower. Makes life a lot easier.

Fall prep is so important for a successful garden in the spring.

My most important suggestion is to put down a layer of at least a foot of leaves in the fall so that I will have a 2 inch matt of leaves in the spring to keep all the weeds from popping through during the summer.  Good for the soil too.
