If You Can Smell It, You Can't Sell It, But Clean Doesn't Smell !

Indoor pollutionIf you can smell it, you can’t sell it.  We’ve all heard this term time and time again.  But, clean doesn’t smell!

While I appreciate many sellers honesty believe the scents such as sprays, candles, gels, plug-ins are pleasing to potential buyers, very often people are offended by these forms of indoor pollution.

Often sellers will place one chemical on top of another in an attempt to achieve a clean smell. Anything scented equals toxic synthetically produced chemicals. The scents are designed to mask the chemicals in the product.

If people only knew how toxic these scents are, they would stop using them immediately.  For instance, one of the most popular air fresheners on the market has over 87 toxic chemicals in it, and can, and has, caused severe allergic reactions in individuals. Plug-ins contain formaldehyde, and other chemicals, plus, they are a fire hazard. Open the windows and ditch the toxic chemicals, candles, and scented sprays.

Clean doesn't smell. When will we get this? Use lemon and vinegar to clean with baking soda. This is all you need. No chemical products needed. They are not safe and are harmful to the environment and to human health.

Good post, Bette, people should be aware of how unhealthy these products are.  Many candles are very toxic and cause allergies, but they can be found in nearly every home.

Well said, Bette.  Instead of trying to mask odors with plug-ins and spray cans and other toxic chemicals, remove the source of the odor.   And forget about baking cookies in the oven, or throwing lemon peels in the garbage disposal.  Those things do not work!

Hello Bette,

Clean is key, but I love natural fragances too...organic soy wax candles or brewing a cinnamon pot on the stove - especially when fall rolls around!

John, Certainly if readers would "google" air fresheners, they would be amazed to see the toxic ingredients.

Fred, Baking cookies in the oven -- that is questionable; however, lemons grated in the garbage disposal works.

Bette,

Wow we are done with air fresheners in the model. I will have to research our scented candles. I do love them but if they are toxic they will have to go!

Larry, Oh I agree, fresh air is best, as long as you aren't next to a pig or chicken farm.

Lisa, Organic soy candle would be okay as long as they were not made with GM soy.  Check with the manufacturer.  Cinnamon on the stove is a nice aroma.

Yolanda, When in doubt, check with the manufacturer to view the ingredients.

Okay, here is one agent that has not heard that phrase! But it does make sense. I just turned my smell good liquid candle off...

Endre, IMHO if the place is that bad, a candle won't help, just open the windows!

Evelyn, It's so scary, the toxins air fresheners and candles expel -- just open the windows or use natural deodorizers or cleansers.

Recently I realized the oriental wall scented plug was that pleasant to others. My niece came in and wanted to know what that horrid smell was! I laughed so hard but unplugged it took it outside.

Now I use another offender; which is a pan of bleach place in the air return system in my house. I like the smell of bleach too.... just waiting for her to come over and give me the okay.
