Upcoming Events & Activities in Leisure World of Maryland
Fall is upon us—and at the beautifully landscaped Leisure World of Maryland, leaves are turning. Indeed, many of us believe this is the opportune time to turn over a new leaf—whether it’s taking up a new hobby, pursuing a new intellectual path, or setting a new life goal. As trees get ready to burst in red, orange, and gold, Leisure World is preparing engaging events for its 8,000+ residents. There’s no better way to ring in the fall season than with a vibrant blend of culture, entertainment, and fitness.
Oktoberfest—Wednesday, October 1, 7-9 PM
The month of October will begin with a fun taste of historical tradition: Oktoberfest, modeled off the festival originating in Munich, Bavaria, Germany in honor of Bavarian Prince Ludwig’s marriage in 1810. An integral aspect of Bavarian culture, Oktoberfest is observed annually across the world—and now it is coming to Leisure World. Award-winning trio Mountain Fever will set the festive atmosphere in Clubhouse I with banjo, mandolin, and guitar delivering bluegrass, folk, and old country tunes. Amid the musical entertainment, residents can sample German-inspired dishes and sip German “bier” from a cash bar. Tickets are $10 per person (Leisure World ID required) and can be purchased in the Education & Recreation Department offices.
Washington Balalaika Society Performance
Sunday, October 12, 7 PM
Under the esteemed direction of conductor Svetlana Nikonova (graduate of Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia), the Washington Balalaika Society will perform Russian, Ukrainian, and Eastern European music in Leisure World’s Clubhouse II auditorium. These talented musicians will play on the balalaika, domra, bayan, and other Russian folk instruments—and with beautiful solos the group will surely captivate the audience. Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased in either Clubhouse I or Clubhouse II.
Appalachian Trail “Windtalker” Performance
Wednesday, October 15, 2-3 PM
With his flute and a scenic photo montage of the vast Appalachian Trail, Randy “Windtalker” Motz will take audience members on an ambient and compelling adventure through their own imaginations. The Windtalker’s contemporary Native-American harmonies will offer unique experiences for those who witness his performance in Clubhouse I. Tickets are $3 per person.
Zumba Gold Classes
Catchy Latin beats included, this popular aerobic-dance fitness program is now offered at Leisure World of Maryland. Zumba Gold routines have been specially tailored for older active adults, individuals who have not exercised regularly for a long time, or individuals who may be physically limited. Members enjoy the same motivation, variety, and thrill as Zumba Basic, but the speeds and intensity levels are more accommodating. Classes are held on Mondays at 10:30 AM from September 22-October 13 and on Fridays at 1 PM from September 26-October 17. Leisure World residents can sign up in Clubhouse II for a registration fee of $25.
Stretch, Tone, and Strength Training Classes
In this class designed specifically for active adults, members are encouraged to use equipment such as weights, balls, and bands to strengthen their muscles, improve their flexibility, and become more in-tune with their bodies. The class meets from 9:15-10:15 AM on Mondays (September 29-November 17) and/or Thursdays (October 2-November 20). Leisure World residents can register in Clubhouse I; the fee is $55 if they sign up for one class per week and $85 if they attend two classes per week.
Thai Chi Classes
Often described as “meditation in motion,” Thai Chi is a peaceful and naturally flowing series of positions and movements—coupled with deep, rhythmic breathing—which ultimately leads to improved flexibility and endurance, better balance and coordination, healthy circulation, and stress reduction. At Leisure World, both a beginner and an advanced class are offered, and the typical routine is stretching and muscle strengthening for 30 minutes, meditation for 10 minutes, and Thai Chi for the last 20 minutes. Starting September 30 and running until November 20, classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:30 AM. Leisure World residents can sign up in Clubhouse II for either one day a week ($30 fee) or two days a week ($50 fee).
German Conversation Classes
In an enriching group environment, members will discuss daily life, traditions, and customs—all in the German tongue. For Leisure World residents who are both interested and proficient in the language, this class is a rewarding way to maintain and build their conversation skills. Classes are held on Wednesdays from 3-4 PM beginning October 8 and lasting until December 10. Residents may sign up in Clubhouse II for a fee of $15.
