Parents - are you involved in your teens Online Behavior?

McAfee 2014 Teens and Screen study shows cyberbullying tripled in 2014! Did you know according to these study sites 87% of preteens and teens witnessed cyberbullying in the last year. I don’t about you but I’m alarmed

with these statistics!

Parents if you aren’t aware you need to be. Parental involvement in your teen’s online life is crucial to stem the tide of cyberbullying. Teens need to understand this behavior is unacceptable and can lead to cruel behavior which affects the physic of not only the victim but the predator.

I received a great article from AT&T Internet Service Customer Care on Year-Round Digital Safety. Their points are well made and worth repeating!

It’s up to parents to educate their children to protect them when their online. Learn to practice “CGLGR!”

Connect with your kids, opening dialogue about the risks of all online connections. Make sure all communication lines are open!

Gain Access. Make sure you as a parent have passwords for all your children’s media accounts and passcodes to their devices. You should have full access at any given time.

Learn the technology. Research and educate yourself on all devices your child uses. You want to stay one step ahead and know more about what is available and how they operate than they do!

Get social. Keep abreast of the newest and latest social networks..stay informed of what sites are important to your child and their friends. You don’t have to create an account but understand how the sites work and check out what your kids are doing on them.

Reputation management. Educate your children that whatever they post online is out there for eternity!

Our kids are tomorrow’s future..let’s make sure we are educating and teaching them to be productive, caring adults. The global economy is changing the world we live in so let’s do our best to instill in our younger generation responsible behavior.

Dorie, great advice for parents or anyone who is supervising young people monitoring to protect them against cyber bulling when it comes to technology.

Many people/parents just don't know how to operate technology and need to get involved.

If I had young children, I'd do all in my power to be very aware of what they are doing on-line.  It's a dangerous place.

Thank goodness those years are behind me.  But yes, I was like her own personal mommy stalker.  At the time I wasn't really worried about bullies, but preditors who might be pretending to be a teen friend.  For most of her teen years, until right before she went off to college she used a computer in the family room.  But late in her senior year I got her a laptop and by then I just had to trust her, she was about to leave for college.

Hi Dorie, This is excellent advice and I'm glad to be past the teenage stage. When my girls were young and wanted to be online, it was with the understanding I had to have their passwords.

Dorie, I have teenage cousins that I'm connected with on Instagram and some of the comments from their "friends" is very concerning. These younger generations have so much more pressure on them nowadays to dress/look/act/etc. a certain way. Parents do need to be involved and aware of what's going on in this area.

Hello Dorie, I came via Prayful's reblog and will repete my comment here with you.

A daunting task no doubt.  A necessary one as well.  The ripples of any pebble dropped in the cyber pool reach beyond our imagination.  Instilling that in a child, or teenager is a must.  Mark

Dorie, if I had a teenager out there on social media, learning half as much about how it all works would be a daunting challenge.  So many of the parents I know are relying on their children to teach them what to do and how to connect.
