Happy Rosh Hashanah! Today Begins the Jewish New Year of 5775
The Jewish New Year is a joyous holiday, and a bit more somber than the American version. It is a time for reflection and a time for planning what comes next in life. Traditions fill the atmosphere with love, contemplation of past, present and the future. It is a time to enjoy family.
A favorite tradition is to dip apples and honey to symbolize a sweet new year.
Unfortunately my family is tiny and both my daughters live far from New York.
To be able to spend a bit of the holiday with my girls we have come up with a new way of celebrating... ie Google Hangouts! This method of being together has started our newest tradition. So while my daughter in California is cooking dinner, she has her computer open and sharing that part of her celebration with us. She is a great cook, so I'm envious of her holiday treats!
On a more unusual note, my younger daughter Kathleen happens to be traveling for workin Uganda (yes, she is safe and sound).
Since Kathleen knew early on that she would be away for the holiday this year she brought honey with her. It was special hone given to her as a homemade gift made in Georgia.
Apples grow in Uganda (although only for export and available at the nicer hotels), and she knew they would be available to her. So tonight my daughter had apples and honey in her hotel room and the same time we did, while we chatted on Google+.
Thousands of miles away in her hotel room in Kampala, Uganda the traditions stay alive. Google+ hangouts made it possible.
As distance seems to be a part of our lives I'm greatful for the technology that keeps us together!
I wish all my ActiveRain Familiy a Happy and Healthy New Year!
May you find joy in all the little celebrations in life.
Happy New Year
