Hayfield Secondary School serves students living in homes in Alexandria. Hayfield Secondary School is part of Cluster 4 and the Hayfield Secondary School pyramid, falling within the Fairfax County Public School System (FCPS) district. The FCPS system is the largest public school system in Northern VA. The mission statement at Hayfield is for teachers and educators to work together to provide a rigorous and challenging educational program for the students, using technology, knowledge of real-world issues and connections to potential employers.
Hayfield Secondary School is unique in that it serves students in grades 7 through 12. The school is designed however to keep the middle school students separate from the high school students. Several diploma options are available, including a standard diploma, advanced studies diploma and a modified diploma.

Students attending Hayfield Secondary School are the only middle school students who feed into Hayfield. There are five elementary schools located near to Hayfield that are within the boundaries for Hayfield Secondary School: Gunston, Hayfield, Island Creek, Lane and Lorton Station. The Fairfax County Public School system has created a convenient boundary locator that can assist residents in determining which public school their child is eligible to attend based on where houses are located.
In addition to providing academic services to high school students in grades 9 through 12, Hayfield Secondary School also offers several programs to help ensure that all students have the ability to find academic success. They offer Career and Technical Education courses through which students can gain knowledge and applicable skills through classroom instruction, lab work and internships. Courses are offered in the following areas: Business and Information Technology, Automotive Technology, the Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) and Marketing.
The Pathway to the Baccalaureate program is another program which focuses on improving a student's access to college. This program supports twelfth graders as they move from high school to Northern Virginia Community College and then again when they transition to a four-year university. Hayfield Secondary School is fortunate to be one of only a small number of high schools in Fairfax County which is piloting a new program called Pathway Connection. This program offers the services provided in the Pathway to the Baccalaureate program to tenth and eleventh graders as well.
The College Partnership Program (CPP) is also offered at Hayfield Secondary School and is another program designed to provide assistance to first generation college students and minority students as they enter on the pathway to college.
The school mascot, a hawk is proudly displayed throughout the school and on school uniforms along with the school colors orange and white.
Hayfield Secondary School students strive for excellence in academics, artistic fields and athletics. Hayfield offers students Advanced Placement classes in preparation for future college study. The school is also home to a Planetarium which has special effect projectors. This is a specialized aid to the Astronomy classes.
Hayfield Secondary School offers students the opportunity to participate in Band, Choral, Drama and Orchestral programs. Both the band and the choir have received awards and the orchestra has received superior ratings in competition.
The athletic department offers students the chance to take part in many different sports. The school won the district championship nine years in a row in wrestling. District championships were also earned in football, volleyball and softball. The school has a strong baseball program, having won the district title and setting many records over the years with several outstanding players.
Hayfield Secondary School has had a notable Robotics team that has finished in the top ten in competition. The Science Olympiad team has earned first place finishes in various categories in competition and in recent years, the school has sent students to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
