Wait a second? Doesn’t the word zen mean peace and tranquility? Last time I heard the home buying process was anything but!! My last transaction was a nightmare!! Did you hear about the neighbors experience
In response I say yes your next purchase can be a zen-like experience! Ironically one of the major sources of stress stems from not knowing exactly what the wants versus needs are. In most cases, you really think this is clearly defined until you start looking at homes. If you are married you and your spouse may have differing views on this topic. To clarify a need is something you have to have to have such as location to employment. On the other hand a want is a desire for something such as an open floor plan. At first glance these may seem to be identical, however they are not. Many times needs and wants overlap and maybe indistinguishable from each other.
One of the best ways to have a zen buying experience is to sit down and write out on paper what you need, or as we say in the business your must haves. These are the lines in the sand. Include items such as purchase price, amount for down payment, location, neighborhood, proximity to shopping etc. Then write down what you want in your next home. Some examples maybe, style of home, open floor plan, granite counters etc. Think about what you like about the place you are currently in and what you do not like. Also think about your lifestyle and how long you intend to stay in this next home. If this is your retirement home, a 2 story home may not be a good purchase. Share this list with your agent.
Does this sound tedious and time consuming? If done properly it should take some time to accomplish, however, the time spent up front will save you time, money and hassle in the end. Having a clear path will keep you focused on what you truly need and truly want.
