Photos for the 2014 Half Ironman in Montauk NY

My husband Rob and our friend Marcia along with a few hundred athletes competed in the 2014 Half Ironman in Montauk NY on Sunday, September 28th.

My husband has competed in many triathlons, marathons, and other running races, but the Montauk Half Ironman is a different world. The training is intense which requires many months and hours of dedicated training. The swim is 1.2 miles, the bike is 56 miles and the run is 13.1 miles which is a half marathon. Athletes had to complete in eight hours or less or would be disqualified.

The swim was in Fort Pond which is a very large lake and most times, very calm. The water was calm for the race, but cold. The map for the swim is here. The bike portion started from the transition area near Fort Pond and up to Montauk Point, back to the Fort Pond area, back up to the point again and then back. Map for the bike is here. The run was 13.1 miles and you can see the map here.

For those of you unfamiliar with Montauk, the roads to go the the Point where the lighthouse is located, have steep hills up and down along the way with winding curves. After my husband and Marcia started the 2nd loop of the bike, Marcia's husband and I drove to the point to get their photos as they biked past us. Watching the other riders pedal up the steep hills made me realize how difficult this half ironman really is.

They both wanted to finish in under the eight hours and they did. We are very proud of them both. It is a great accomplishment to complete a half ironman! Please enjoy the photos below.

My husband's time results. The T1 & T2 are for the transition time which is the time it took to change from the wetsuit and get on the bike. The T2 is the time it took to get off the bike and start the run....

Hi Jared. You are in great shape. Train for 1 year for a 1/2 ironman and you will be able to do it. Just figure out if an open area swim would bother you. If it does, work on that first. If not, go train your butt off
